BACKGROUND The prognosis value of early clinical diagnosis of consciousness impairment is documented by an extremely limited number of studies, whereas it may convey important information to guide medical decisions. OBJECTIVE We aimed at determining if patients diagnosed at an early stage (<90 days after brain injury) as being in the minimally conscious state (MCS) have a better prognosis than patients in the vegetative state/Unresponsive Wakefulness syndrome (VS/UWS), independent of care limitations or withdrawal decisions. METHODS Patients hospitalized in ICUs of the Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital (Paris, France) from November 2008 to January 2011 were included and evaluated behaviourally with standardized assessment and with the Coma Recovery Scale-Revised as being either in the VS/UWS or in the MCS. They were then prospectively followed until 1July 2011 to evaluate their outcome with the GOSE. We compared survival function and outcomes of these two groups. RESULTS Both survival function and outcomes, including consciousness recovery, were significantly better in the MCS group. This difference of outcome still holds when considering only patients still alive at the end of the study. CONCLUSIONS Early accurate clinical diagnosis of VS/UWS or MCS conveys a strong prognostic value of survival and of consciousness recovery. [less ▲]

A human biomonitoring study was carried out measuring the levels of endocrine disruptors in 252 participants (18-76 years old) recruited between February and May 2015 from the general population of Liege Province (Belgium). In this study, we reported the recent levels of cadmium and mercury in urine, some organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in serum, and their relations to demographic characteristics, lifestyle behaviors and dietary habits. The median urinary levels of mercury and cadmium were 0.81 µg/l and <0.5µg/l respectively. The mercury levels were higher in participants having at least 3 dental amalgams, and consuming sea fish more than once a week. Although our mercury levels in most participants were lower than some health-based guidelines, they were higher than in our neighboring countries where ban or restrictions on the dental amalgams use were implemented. Urinary cadmium levels in current smokers were significantly higher than former or never smokers, as well as non-smokers for passively exposed vs non-exposed ones. Median PCB-153 and -180 serum levels were 53.8 and 41.1 ng/g lipid respectively, but PCB-138 was below the limit of quantification of 0.15 µg/l in 49% of the samples. Among the organochlorine pesticides, 4,4’-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (4,4’-DDE), beta-hexachlorohexane and hexachlorobenzene were positively detected respectively in 48%, 49% and 37% of the serum samples. Eventhough, a dramatic decrease in organochlorines levels was observed, at least 1 pesticide or PCB was detected in 96% of our population, and more than 50% of our samples were contaminated by 4 or more organochlorines. Age, body mass index, and breastfeeding duration were the most predictive determinants of pesticide or PCB serum concentrations, but not dietary habits. [less ▲]

To predict solvent degradation in an industrial CO2 capture process and for a better understanding of the interactions between solvent degradation and performance of the capture process, an existing dynamic model of an amine based pilot plant for carbon capture has been improved and adapted at the University of Babes-Bolyai on the basis of the kinetic model of solvent oxidative degradation proposed at the University of Liège. The developed dynamic model has been used to simulate the transient behavior of the CO2 capture process with assessment of solvent degradation. [less ▲]

The volatile oils of Eucalyptus camaldulensis leaves harvested in three agro-ecological areas in Senegal were analyzed by GC-FID and GC-MS. Yields ranged from 0.5 to 1.0%. Qualitative and quantitative différences were determined in the composition according to leave sources. The main compounds of Saint-Louis oils were= 18.-cineole (69.3-73.0%) and limonene (12.4-13.5%) whereas those from Kaolack were charaterized by p-cymene (28.4-32.6%), 1.8-cineole (16.8-20.0%), alpha-pinene (8.7-11.6%) and limonene (7.8-8.3%). Those from Dakar revealed high content of béta-pinene (25.3-34.4%) and alpha-eudesmol (12.3-20.6%). During drying of leaves, the proportions of all major compounds (except limonene) increased and were optimal after 2 hours extraction duration. [less ▲]

Recent advances in organometallic-mediated radical polymerization led to unique α,ω-difunctional poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA). A copper- catalyzed Huisgen dipolar cycloaddition ring-closure reaction was applied to these difunctional precursors paving the way to unprecedented PVAc and/or EVA macrocycles, and to their PVOH- and EVOH-counterparts after hydrolysis. Auroral emissions are expected from the footprint of Callisto in Jupiter's upper atmosphere owing to the known interaction of its atmosphere with Jupiter's magnetosphere, and from the observed auroral emissions from the footprints of the other three Galilean satellites. The mapping of Callisto along modeled magnetic field lines at Jupiter, however, places the expected footprint at the same latitude as the main auroral emissions, making it difficult to detect. We analyzed ultraviolet images of Jupiter taken using the HST/ACS instrument during a large observing campaign in 2007. Using a co-addition method similar to one used for Enceladus, we have identified a strong candidate for the footprint of Callisto on May 24, 2007. We tested this finding by applying the same co-addition technique to a nearly identical auroral configuration on May 30, 2007 when Callisto was behind Jupiter, not visible from Earth (CML = 22°; sub-Callisto system III longitude = 327°). By comparing the two co-added images, we can clearly see the presence of a strongly sub-corotating spot close to the expected Callisto footprint location on 24th May and its absence on 30th May. On the 24th Callisto was located in the current sheet. We also found a probable candidate on 26th May 2007 during which time Callisto was positioned below the current sheet. The measured location and intensity of the auroral emission provides important information about the interaction of Callisto with Jupiter's magnetic field, the corotating plasma, and the neutral and ionized state of the thin atmosphere of Callisto.
