The majority of imaginable (and relevant) accidental scenarios on building structures are initiated at the ground level by a column suffering damage, mainly due to a localized explosion or a vehicle impact. The transmitted vertical forces from the column to the structure are decisive in understanding the response of the building and are the subject of analysis of this paper. The classic definition of a column loss scenario is extended here by means of a simplified analytical approach to characterize the axial forces appearing in the column during the damage process. A simple closed-form solution is proposed to define the loading scenario on the structure and compared to the classic rectangular (un)loading approach. In certain cases, the proposed analysis shows a more unfavorable loading situation for the structure, which needs to be accounted for during design. [less ▲]

Modelling the entire ductile fracture process remains a challenge. On the one hand, continuous damage models succeed in capturing the initial diffuse damage stage but are not able to represent discontinuities or cracks. On the other hand, discontinuous methods, as the cohesive zones, which model the crack propagation behaviour, are suited to represent the localised damaging process. However, they are unable to represent diffuse damage. Moreover, most of the cohesive models do not capture triaxiality effect. In this paper, the advantages of the two approaches are combined in a single damage to crack transition framework. In a small deformation setting, a non-local elastic damage model is associated with a cohesive model in a discontinuous Galerkin finite element framework. A cohesive band model is used to naturally introduce a triaxiality-dependent behaviour inside the cohesive law. Practically, a numerical thickness is introduced to recover a 3D-state, mandatory to incorporate the in-plane stretch effects. This thickness is evaluated to ensure the energy consistency of the method and is not a new numerical parameter. The traction-separation law is then built from the underlying damage model. [less ▲]

Extraction is a downstream-process option in bio-based processes. Since the knowledge of phase-separation behavior is essential for designing efficient separation processes, this study investigates the settling and coalescence behavior of bio-based extraction systems using a standard lab-scale settling cell. The influence of different buffer media as well as of E. coli cells on coalescence was determined for the reactive extraction of hexane-1.6-diamine with isostearic acid and D2EHPA using kerosene and oleyl alcohol as diluents. As a result, an increasing pH value of the buffer significantly increases settling time. The presence of E. coli cells hinders the phase separation of the investigated systems, in particular with dispersed organic phases. [less ▲]

The Saint-Denis altarpiece has been widely admired, commented and studied for a long time. Its conservation in the church, even after a new main altar in baroque style was placed in the choir, is an indication of the importance this work had acquired throughout time. Its painted wings were especially appreciated and were attributed to Lambert Lombard, Liège’s most renowned Renaissance painter, as early as the beginning of the 18th century. But this attribution has been discussed passionately, especially since the 1970’s. At the centre of these debate, we find a document dated 1533, discovered in 1958, naming a “Lambertum pictorem” working for Saint-Denis collegiate church. But this mention needs to be reconsidered and contextualised. This publication aims to present the content of this document and to dissect its meaning in the context of the making of the altarpiece, to which it has been related since its discovery. A new transcription will be provided and new archival material will be unveiled in order to shed a new light on this document as well as to give new paths to reconstruct the processes at work in the making of the altarpiece. La démocratie reste un thème chéri par la philosophie politique contemporaine, pour l’écart entre ses théories et ses pratiques, pour la distance critique que ses théories offrent vis-à-vis des régimes démocratiques et de leur évolution, mais aussi parce qu’elle est un objet perpétuel de dissensus entre philosophes, au sujet duquel toute prétention à la véridiction est suspendue à sa réalisation pratique. À ce titre, la transmission de la volonté démocratique est un topos houleux de la philosophie politique contemporaine. Cette question catalyse les concepts pivots des philosophies politiques, la leur poser permet de mieux saisir les enjeux rivaux derrière une terminologie commune à plusieurs auteurs. C’est dans cette démarche que je vous propose d’examiner en miroir les philosophies de Cornélius Castoriadis et de Jacques Rancière. De plus en plus nombreux, des commentateurs rapprochent leurs pensées , qui peuvent s’appuyer sur plusieurs points communs : un attachement au concept de démocratie brandit contre les régimes parlementaires, une opposition contemporaine (quoique depuis des héritages différents) aux thèses défendues par Althusser, et une proximité de sources d’inspirations : la philosophie, le marxisme, et la psychanalyse. Partant de la manière dont cette proximité s’exprime dans la disjonction que chacun opère entre démocratie et science, je tenterai de discerner comment les inflexions qu’ils impriment aux concepts de volonté et d’égalité sous la guise des enjeux de la transmission dessinent des horizons politiques distincts, et dénotent des compréhensions antithétiques – mais indécidables dans la théorie – de ce que peut être la démocratie. Objectives: (1) To investigate music theory teachers’ professional and extra-professional vocal loading and background noise exposure, (2) to determine the correlation between vocal loading and background noise, and (3) to determine the correlation between vocal loading and self-evaluation data. Methods: Using voice dosimetry, 13 music theory teachers were monitored for one workweek. Parameters analysed were voice SPL, F0, phonation time, vocal loading index (VLI) and noise SPL. Spearman’s correlation was used to correlate vocal loading parameters (voice SPL, F0 and phonation time) and noise SPL. Each day, subjects self-assessed their voice using visual analogue scales. VLI and self-evaluation data were correlated using Spearman’s correlation. Results: Vocal loading parameters and noise SPL were significantly higher in the professional than in the extra-professional environment. Voice SPL, phonation time and females’ F0 correlated positively with noise SPL. VLI correlated with self-assessed voice quality, vocal fatigue and amount of singing and speaking voice produced. Conclusions: Teaching music theory is a profession with high vocal demands. More background noise is associated with increased vocal loading and may indirectly increase the risk for voice disorders. Correlations between VLI and self-assessments suggest that these teachers are well-aware of their vocal demands and feel their effect on voice quality and vocal fatigue. Visual analogue scales seem to represent a useful tool for subjective vocal loading assessment and associated symptoms in these professional voice users. [less ▲]

Flowers are susceptible to many pests and diseases. Therefore, they can be sprayed several times during their growth considering that no MRL are set for flow-ers. High levels of pesticide residues potentially expose daily the florists who han-dle cut flowers and possibly could endanger their health. A study was carried out to evaluate the risk for florists exposed to fungicide residues during normal profes-sional tasks. Cotton gloves were distributed to 20 florists (two pairs to each florist) and worn during two consecutive half days during normal professional tasks (from min 2 hours to max 3 hours/day) to measure their potential dermal exposure (PDE). Samples were analyzed with a multi-residue (QuEChERS) method validated by a laboratory accredited for pesticide residues and with a combination of gas and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. It appears from the results that a total of 54 fungicides with different toxicity classes were detected on cotton gloves. An average of 15.53 mg/kg fungicide residues per glove sample was meas-ured. Six of 54 are suspected of causing cancer after prolonged or repeated expo-sure. Boscalid was both the active substance for which the highest maximum and average concentrations (26.21 and 3.47 mg/kg, respectively). Famoxadone had the most critical PDE (156% AOEL for the maximum concentration). As a consequence, this study leads to conclude that Belgian florists, who worked for several years and handled a large number of flowers contaminated by high concentrations of pesti-cide residues, are exposed daily with a potential effect on their health. This sug-gests that safety standards should be set for residue levels on cut flowers. [less ▲]

Plant protection products play a very important role in agriculture. However, their misuse can have serious negative impacts both on human health and environment. A study was carried out to identify the plant protection products used in the Niger River valley and to observe the local pesticide management practices. Ten active substances were identified as the most used chemicals by farmers. Their toxicological properties were characterized and their respective Potential Dermal Exposures (PDE) was evaluated in order to assess the risk level for the local small growers. The UK Predictive Operator Exposure Model was used to quantify the PDE during mixing/loading and application according to the local practices. The survey shows that the most common active substances are organophosphate or pyrethroids insecticides. In addition, some other prohibited and counterfeit pesticides cocktails are also used. All active substances used in Niger River valley are highly toxic. When sprayed without personal protective equipment (PPE) they could induce significant harmful impacts on the human health after exposure. The predictive exposure levels vary from 0.0013 mg/kg bw/day to 0.4125 mg/kg bw/day, several times higher the Acceptable Operator Exposure Level (AOEL) for all actives substances. The survey also revealed that 76% of operators do not use any PPE during mixing/loading or spraying. Other bad practices observed in study area can increase the exposure of operators. Moreover, local consumers could also be exposed through intake of pesticide residues on harvested products. [less ▲]

We introduce the concept of constant 2-labelling of a vertex-weighted graph and show how it can be used to obtain perfect weighted coverings. Roughly speaking, a constant 2-labelling of a vertex-weighted graph is a black and white colouring of its vertex set which preserves the sum of the weights of black vertices under some automorphisms. We study constant 2-labellings on four types of vertex-weighted cycles. Our results on cycles allow us to determine (r, a, b)-codes in Z^2 whenever |a−b|>4, r>1 and we give the precise values of a and b. This is a refinement of Axenovich’s theorem proved in 2003. While it goes undisputed that international criminal tribunals (ICTs) are, in general terms, bound to respect human rights standards, there is no consensus on whether their obligations should be identical in scope to those of national criminal tribunals. Most commentators seem to value the idea of equality in protection for international and domestic defendants alike. Yet, according to others, the human rights obligations of ICTs should be contextualised, that is, adapted to the specificities of international justice – and most critically to the gravity of international crimes. This article seeks to shed some light on this debate. It does so, in particular, by pointing out the intrinsic flexibility of human rights, and by drawing on the practice of the European Court of Human Rights with respect to gravity-based contextualism. La justice pénale internationale n’est, pas plus que les tribunaux nationaux, épargnée par ce « paradoxe pénal ». C’est cette conviction qui a inspiré le présent ouvrage. Son ambition est de mettre l’action de la Cour pénale internationale à l’épreuve de l’exigence de liberté. Le droit et la pratique de la Cour pénale internationale y sont ainsi successivement confrontés à sept applications concrètes de cette garantie essentielle : le droit d’être informé des raisons de sa privation de liberté, le droit d’être présenté à un juge, le droit de contester le bien-fondé de sa privation de liberté, le droit à la liberté stricto sensu, le droit d’être libéré pour raisons humanitaires, le droit d’être jugé rapidement ou libéré au cours de la procédure et, enfin, le droit à une réparation appropriée. It is a common view that a strict distinction should be maintained between human rights case law and human rights law proper. The authority of human rights norms would be general, while human rights jurisprudence would only consist of the casuistic application of these norms to a specific case. This chapter seeks to nuance this view, with specific reference to the cross-fertilisation phenomenon before the International Criminal Court. It shows that, in its early practice, the permanent ICC has repeatedly relied on human rights case law, not because it was merely choosing to do so, but more particularly, because it considered the relevant findings to be binding as 'internationally recognised human rights' in the meaning of Article 21(3) of the Rome Statute. By focusing on these instances of mandatory reference to the practice of human rights bodies, this chapter also contributes to the existing literature on 'internationally recognised human rights', through an account of the ICC's own perspective on this crucial notion. Occupant tout les deux une position liminale du champ de la bande dessinée, Jochen Gerner et Ilan Manouach se sont, chacun à leur manière, livrés à des expériences réflexives de destruction de l'image en bande dessinée par le détournement. Ainsi, avec ses projets tels que TNT en Amérique, Abstraction (1941-1968), ou Le Panorama du Feu, Jochen Gerner opère par la technique du recouvrement une relecture d'albums classiques et de petits formats populaires, attirant l'attention sur certains motifs graphiques, abstraits ou figuratifs des objets détournés. Plus en phase avec l'héritage situationniste du détournement, Ilan Manouach intervient sur les œuvres appropriées pour en questionner les principes idéologiques : Katz interroge la métaphore animale au cœur de Maus, tandis qu'avec Les Schtroumpfs noirs, il retourne au thème de la représentation en imprimant l'album de Peyo entièrement en cyan. Moins politisé dans Riki fermier, Manouach y fait disparaître les personnages d'un album de Petzi pour ne garder que celui du pélican Riki, suivant un projet d'écriture à contrainte décrit comme « lipogrammatique ». Pour Gerner comme Manouach, la pratique du détournement touche directement à la matérialité de l'objet de bande dessinée, au sens où il y a une intervention physique sur les bandes dessinées détournées – que ce soit par recouvrement, retouche ou réimpression – qui se double d'un maintien du format de l'objet détourné (48 CC, pocket, pamphlet ou roman graphique). Le lecteur se retrouve ainsi face à une dé-familiarisation d'un objet pourtant connu et reconnu dans sa matérialité. Cette expérience conscientise un acte réflexif de destruction : les images d'origine se voient recouvertes de noir, rayées, masquées, retouchées, effacées, défigurées. Tout en étant extrêmement opaque, ce rapport à la matérialité est cependant différent d'autres formes de « graphiation »1 qui attirent l'attention sur une gestuelle physique, sur les traces de la main. Au contraire, comme l'a noté Pedro Moura à propos du travail d'Ilan Manouach, il y a une volonté de se « plac[er] en dehors du domaine de l’expression auctoriale, et même humaine, afin de favoriser l’émergence d’une expression dépersonnalisée »2. Plus proches d'une écriture « non-créative » telle que l'a décrite Kenneth Goldsmith3, ces deux pratiques du détournement mettent en scène une destruction d'images, dont les livres en portent la trace, donnant lieu à une traçabilité différente d'une graphiation qui mettrait en avant la patte graphique du dessinateur. La mesure destructrice de cette acte de détournement se retrouve d'ailleurs en prises avec le dispositif juridique du copyright, comme l'atteste la réaction des ayant-droits à Katz, envoyé au pilon. Face à ces deux formes de destruction (destruction de l'œuvre détourné et, retour du bâton, pilonnage du détournement), MetaKatz s'offre une double portée réflexive qui couvre toute la portée du geste destructeur au cœur du détournement, un acte qui se veut en même temps être une forme d'engendrement, puisqu'il ouvre à de nouveaux dispositifs, à de nouvelles images, et à de nouvelles lectures. Notre chapitre mettra donc en parallèle les œuvres d'Ilan Manouach et de Jochen Gerner afin d'examiner comment la question de la destruction se trouve au cœur du détournement, et de façon plus spécifique, comment celle-ci relève d'un rapport complexe à la matérialité du médium dont nous étudierons les enjeux. In cold rolling of thin metal strip, contact conditions between the work rolls and the strip are of great importance: roll deformations and their effect on strip thickness variation may lead to strip flatness defects and thickness inhomogeneity. To control the process, several online measurements are usually carried out such as the rolling load, forward slip and strip tensions at each stand. Shape defects of the strip are usually evaluated after the last stand of a rolling mill thanks to a flatness measuring roll. However, none of these measurements is made within the roll bite itself due to the harsh conditions taking place in that area. This paper presents a sensor capable of monitoring roll deformations as well as roll radial stresses in situ and in real time. The sensor emits ultrasonic pulses that reflect from the roll surface. The time-of-flight (ToF) of the pulses is recorded during the testing. The sensor system was incorporated into a work roll and tested on a pilot rolling mill. Measurements were taken as steel strips were rolled under different strip elongation. Roll deformation and radial stresses obtained from the experimental data are in good agreement with numerical results computed with a cold rolling model developed in non-linear Finite Element software.
