We consider optimising bone neotissue growth in a 3D scaffold during dynamic perfusion bioreactor culture. The goal is to choose design variables by optimising two conflicting objectives: (i) maximising neotissue growth and (ii) minimising operating cost. Our contribution is a novel extension of Bayesian multi-objective optimisation to the case of one black-box (neotissue growth) and one analytical (operating cost) objective function, that helps determine, within a reasonable amount of time, what design variables best manage the trade-off between neotissue growth and operating cost. Our method is tested against and outperforms the most common approach in literature, genetic algorithms, and shows its important real-world applicability to problems that combine black-box models with easy-to-quantify objectives like cost. Current codes and standards for fire design of structures in the United States are mainly based on design at the component level using prescriptive approaches, while performance-based design for fire can be used to address the needs for designing modern buildings with cost-effective solutions. Previous research shows that, when system-level performance is considered, fire protection on secondary beam elements in composite steel-concrete floor systems is not necessary due to the development of a membrane action in the concrete slab during fire. This study compares the fire design of a 9-story office building using prescriptive and performance-based designs. The safety levels of the two designs are investigated and compared. It is shown that performance-based design can be used to achieve the required level of safety currently enforced in the U.S. prescriptive guidelines, while providing an opportunity for cost reduction in fire protection material. Proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) catalysts are generally made of carbon black (CB)supported platinum-based nanoparticles. However, the properties of CBs, as described by RodríguezReinoso [1], are not optimal for electrocatalysis. A possible solution to the drawbacks of CBs is the use of synthetic nanostructured materials with a controllable and reproducible texture and with a pure, known and constant chemical composition; carbon xerogels (CX) exhibit such properties [2]. Recently, various highly dispersed CX-supported Pt nanoparticles catalysts (Pt/CX) have been synthesized via several methods, such as the strong electrostatic adsorption (SEA) [3] or the charge-enhanced dry impregnation (CEDI) [4]. However, the decrease of the Pt mass contained in the PEMFC electrodes, in particular at the cathode where the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is processed, remains a major challenge. Improving the ORR mass activity is currently best achieved by alloying Pt with 3d-transition metal atoms such as cobalt (Co). These alloys perform better than the ORR because the substitution of some Pt atoms by 3d-metal atoms with smaller radius leads to a modified Pt electronic structure [5]. The synthesis and durability of Pt-Co hollow particles/CX (Fig. 1) is currently being studied in our groups. The results indicate that the specific and mass activity of the bimetallic hollow particles dispersed on CX is ca. 10 times higher than that of pure Pt/CB. The first durability results show good stability of the hollow particles structure. Performances and accelerated stress tests (ASTs) in PEMFCs were finally performed. [less ▲]

Abstract Background There are numerous definitions of General Practice and Family Medicine (GP/FM) and Primary Health Care (PHC), but the distinction between the two concepts is unclear. Aim To conduct a terminological analysis of a set of definitions of GP/FM and of PHC, to clarify what binds and what distinguishes these two concepts. Design The terms of 20 definitions were collected in two bags of words (one for GP/FM and one for PHC terms). A terminological analysis of these two bags of words was performed to prioritize the terms and analyze their world of reference. Methods The two collected bags of words were extracted with Vocabgrabber®, configured in two term butts using Wordle®, and further explored for similarities using Tropes®. The prioritized terms were analyzed using the Aristotelian approach to categorization of things. Results Although continuity of care (with person-centered approach and shared decision making) is the central issue of the two sets, the two sets of definitions differ greatly in content. The prioritized terms specific to GP/FM (community, medicine, responsibility, individual, problem, needs, ...) are different from prioritized terms specific to PHC (home, team, promotion, collaborator, engagement, neighborhood, medical center…). Conclusion Terminological analysis of the definitions for GP/FM and PHC shows two entities which are overlapping but distinct, necessitating a different taxonomic approach and different bibliographic search strategies. In this study, a 3D thermal model of laser cladding by powder injection applied to Ti-6Al-4V is developed. The manufactured part is made of a Ti-6Al-4V substrate on which successive layers of laser melted powder are added, leading to a thick deposit. The computed temperature field and its time evolution are compared to experimental measurements. The temperature distribution in the substrate allows the prediction of the depths of the melt pool and the heat affected zone. Correlations between simulated thermal histories and the final microstructure in the thick deposit are established, leading to the enhancement of a dynamic shift of the critical transformation points due to high thermal rates during laser processing. The nature of the phases present within the deposit is discussed. [less ▲]

In Belgium, there is a particular group of music teachers referred to as music theory teachers. Working at music schools, they convey theoretical knowledge and practical musical skills to groups of individuals who learn music during their free-time. Even though music theory teachers use both speaking and singing voice intensively at work, little is known about their voice use profiles. This study investigated the vocal loading among French-speaking music theory teachers. Objectives were (1) to describe their professional and extra-professional vocal loading, (2) to determine the relationship between vocal loading and background noise level and (3) to investigate whether objectively measured vocal loading is reflected in music theory teachers’ auto-evaluation of their voice. Using voice dosimetry, 13 music theory teachers were monitored for one workweek. Parameters analysed were F0, voice sound pressure level (SPL), phonation time, vocal loading index (VLI) and background noise SPL. At the end of each monitoring day, subjects self-assessed their voice use by means of visual analogue scales. Results revealed (1) significantly higher vocal loading in the professional context than in the extra-professional context, (2) significant positive correlations between background noise level and the parameters F0, voice SPL and phonation time and (3) significant correlations between the VLI and auto-evaluation data (e.g. voice quality and vocal fatigue). These results highlight that teaching music theory is a profession with high vocal demands. At work, music theory teachers are exposed to high background noise, which seems to influence their voice use and may potentially contribute to the development of voice problems among this population. Visual analogue scales provide a promising tool to subjectively investigate vocal loading among music theory teachers. [less ▲]

Due to the high vocal demands associated with their profession, teachers face an increased risk of developing voice disorders. Research suggests that up to 50 % of experienced teachers are affected. Even student teachers, whose vocal load is still relatively low, report voice problems with a frequency of 20 % (Simberg, Laine, Sala, & Rönnemaa, 2000). Little is known about the prevalence of voice disorders among teachers at the very beginning of their career. In Germany, teachers must complete a two-year teaching practice as part of their professional training after they graduate from university, consisting of attending specialized courses and giving lessons. The aim of this symptom-based study was to determine the prevalence of voice problems among this population. A self-administered questionnaire was answered by 73 German teachers in teaching practice. The prevalence of a voice problem was defined based on the presence of two symptoms that persisted for a minimum of two weeks. Results revealed that 37 % of teachers had voice problems during their teaching practice. Among the most frequent symptoms were hoarseness, an urge to clear one’s throat and problems speaking at a loud voice. Considering that the participants had not even begun teaching full-time, the prevalence of reported voice problems is worrisome. It could be associated with their lacking experience in how to use their voice effectively. The findings highlight the necessity of early intervention programs focusing on vocal hygiene and effective voice use in classroom situations. [less ▲]

Multistage testing (MST; Yan, von Davier & Lewis, 2014) has become an important framework of tailored testing. Similarly to computerized adaptive testing (CAT) it proposes an optimal routing of the administered items according to the previous test taker’s responses. However, items are not selected and administered as single units but as modules (subsets). The main goal of MST consists in selecting the optimal path of modules across the successive stages of the test. Unfortunately, if various operational testing programs are nowadays considering MST for practical administrations, there is still very limited access to accurate software that can either treat or generate MST scenarios for research purposes. In this talk we succinctly present a new package from the R software, called mstR (Magis, Yan & von Davier, 2017). Built in the same spirit of the package catR for CAT designs, it permits to generate repeated response patterns under a predefined MST scenario by providing the set of modules and related item parameters, the number of stages and the connections between modules from successive stages. Several rules for optimal module selection and ability estimation (under IRT framework or based on test scores) are also available. This talk will mostly focus on the (non-technical) description of package mstR and its main features. An example will also be described as an illustration of this framework. [less ▲]

La présente recherche se situe au croisement de plusieurs traditions disciplinaires – les sciences du jeu, les études littéraires, la rhétorique, les cultural studies – et de plusieurs objets – le jeu, le détournement, les fanfictions, machinimas, speedruns, let’s plays et mods. Sans prétendre opérer ici leur synthèse ou leur conciliation, nous tenterons de dégager, entre ces différents domaines, de nouvelles ouvertures : nous montrerons, en circulant parmi eux, qu’ils sont pris dans des tensions, des dynamiques, des questionnements similaires et, surtout, centraux pour la compréhension de la culture populaire contemporaine. Plusieurs objectifs nous animent : définir le détournement et, à travers lui, éclairer sous un autre jour le fonctionnement du jeu ; développer un métadiscours à même de soutenir l’analyse des œuvres produites par les joueurs ; enfin, par la même occasion, défendre l’intérêt d’étudier de près ces œuvres amateurs, trop souvent délaissées par la recherche au profit des pratiques, et qui sont pourtant des épicentres essentiels autour desquels se développent les cultures ludiques. La poursuite de ces objectifs, toutefois, ne va pas sans soulever des questions complexes, qui traversent toute la thèse : quels parallèles et quelle frontière établir entre le détournement et le jeu ? Comment une œuvre est-elle reconnue, étiquetée, classée comme un détournement ? Qu’est-ce au juste qu’une œuvre dans un domaine où l’intertextualité, la reprise, la réinterprétation sont des normes ? Avec quels outils décrire les formes du détournement, et qu’ont en commun les genres disparates regroupés sous cette dénomination ? Nous traiterons ces diverses interrogations en deux temps. La première partie de la thèse, qui comporte deux sous-sections, en constituera le socle théorique : un premier chapitre y aborde les relations intimes entre jeu et détournement, tout en resituant notre recherche dans les différents champs qu’elle fait se croiser ; le second chapitre s’attache à la constitution d’un cadre métadiscursif inspiré de la rhétorique, visant à définir ce que pourraient être des « figures » du détournement vidéoludique. La deuxième partie, plus analytique, servira d’application au cadre précédemment construit, en montrant son utilité sur des études d’œuvres concrètes. Celles-ci sont réparties en trois grandes catégories : les détournements par le play (let’s plays, speedruns, tool-assisted speedruns et machinimas), les détournements du game (fanfictions et mods) et les recontextualisations (« Twitch plays… »). Par ailleurs, en guise de fil conducteur, toutes ces œuvres – de formes et de genres variés – auront pour point commun essentiel d’être dérivées d’un même univers fictionnel : celui de la licence Pokémon. Strong gravitational lens systems with time delays between the multiple images allow measurements of time-delay distances, which are primarily sensitive to the Hubble constant that is key to probing dark energy, neutrino physics and the spatial curvature of the Universe, as well as discovering new physics. We present H0LiCOW (H[SUB]0[/SUB] Lenses in COSMOGRAIL's Wellspring), a program that aims to measure H[SUB]0[/SUB] with <3.5 per cent uncertainty from five lens systems (B1608+656, RXJ1131-1231, HE 0435-1223, WFI2033-4723 and HE 1104-1805). We have been acquiring (1) time delays through COSMOGRAIL and Very Large Array monitoring, (2) high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope imaging for the lens mass modelling, (3) wide-field imaging and spectroscopy to characterize the lens environment and (4) moderate-resolution spectroscopy to obtain the stellar velocity dispersion of the lenses for mass modelling. In cosmological models with one-parameter extension to flat Λ cold dark matter, we expect to measure H[SUB]0[/SUB] to <3.5 per cent in most models, spatial curvature Ω[SUB]k[/SUB] to 0.004, w to 0.14 and the effective number of neutrino species to 0.2 (1σ uncertainties) when combined with current cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments. These are, respectively, a factor of ˜15, ˜2 and ˜1.5 tighter than CMB alone. Our data set will further enable us to study the stellar initial mass function of the lens galaxies, and the co-evolution of supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. This program will provide a foundation for extracting cosmological distances from the hundreds of time-delay lenses that are expected to be discovered in current and future surveys. [less ▲]

This paper intend to present the results of the state of emergency project. The project started in 2014 with a simple question: how researchers that work in immigration can communicate with civil society outside the traditional academic channels? It is not only a matter of popularization of academic research, but mainly brings researchers into society, far from the academic walls. The answer to this question was the art and the spaces of culture. Art, and also cultural spaces have enormous potential, its could bring together different social groups and help researchers to be in society, and making their research accessible. In the society, debates on immigration are mostly dominated by media and political representations, what is also polarizing societies between solidarity and anti-immigration movement's. Therefore, the presence of researchers to discuss the immigration issue in society has become urgent. The state of emergency project had as a bases my research, “The borders of Nord-Pas-deCalais” (2014), and brought together two dancers, two acrobats, a scene director and a plastic artist. The project started from the assumption that art is a collective production, but artistic intention started with the individual consciousness on the issue the artist is focusing. It was adopted the artistic improvisation method to develop a spectacle and other tolls. In order to incorporate research on immigration into artistic production it was necessary to present and to appropriate the artists of basic concepts, but also carry out a fieldwork, that was developed during a month at the French border (Calais city). The methodology adopted by the artists consisted in a fieldwork. The project took two years to be concluded. The result was a dance spectacle, “Dites a ma mère que je suis la”, and a hybrid form of workshop that mixes the artistic and the methods of immigration research. I contrast, I developed during the project a multi-sited ethnography whit the artists. Where the main objective was to understand which impact the scientific knowledge on the issue could produce in artist's way to see immigration, and how this new approach could change the researcher and artist productions. this paper will offer an overview of procedures allowing EU agencies to determine the equivalence of third country regulatory regimes and conceptualise the accountability challenges they pose. Proceeding in three parts, the first part will identify and classify the different third country equivalence procedures in place. Analysing the legal basis for agency intervention and the specific powers granted to the respective agencies in that respect, this part will allow to develop a topology of two different equivalence roles conferred on EU agencies. Building upon this descriptive analysis, the second part will identify two accountability challenges associated with each of the identified third country equivalence procedure categories. Seeking to overcome those challenges, the third part of the paper will make four pointed suggestions aimed at recognising explicitly and in a more centralised way the external action powers conferred on EU agencies. Doing so would at the very least allow better to tailor modifications to the external action frameworks against the background of which existing equivalence procedures currently already implicitly operate. Notre thèse se décline en une approche chronologico-thématique autour de trois pôles majeurs. Il s'agit, tout d'abord d'une démonstration qui entend établir un tableau aussi précis que possible de la structure, des rouages et de l'implantation des organisations d'AF à Paris et en province. L'objectif est ensuite d'analyser les grandes matrices de l'engagement militant mais aussi et surtout leurs évolutions successives en lien avec un contexte politico-diplomatique extrêmement mouvant. Il s'agit pour chaque période donnée de chercher à comprendre ce qui constitue l'engagement au sein de la ligue dans une approche résolument tournée vers la base militante. Enfin, il faut réfléchir à la place et au rôle de l'AF dans la nébuleuse royaliste et nationaliste de son temps afin de comprendre les jeux d'alliance et de concurrence entre les diverses organisations mais aussi dans quelle mesure et de quelle manière la ligue d'AF s'est intégrée au répertoire d'action collective de son temps tout en participant à son renouvellement. Le choix de notre découpage chronologique répond à des nécessités à la fois contextuelles et propres à l'histoire de l'Action française. Au cours de la première période, de 1905 à 1914, on assiste à une structuration rapide et continue de l'appareil d'action intellectuelle et militante. Les rouages nationaux et locaux de la ligue se mettent en place et les matrices de l'engagement militant sont diffusées par l'intermédiaire du quotidien et contribuent à influencer l'opinion publique. A cette époque, l'AF est presque seule dans le champ nationaliste mais doit se positionner au sein du monde royaliste. Pendant la Grande Guerre, les structures de la ligue sont désorganisées. L'objectif principal est alors de continuer à diffuser le journal ce qui n'empêche pas la ligue d'utiliser le temps de guerre pour tenter de nouvelles méthodes de propagande notamment dans l'armée. La période 1914-1918 permet aussi à l'AF de se respectabiliser en choisissant la voie de l'Union sacrée. Elle reste malgré tout une organisation particulièrement surveillée d'autant plus que son influence dans l'opinion publique s'accroît. Après-guerre, l'AF se réorganise partout en province. Au cours de la période 1919-1926, elle fait l'expérience de la vie parlementaire et glisse, de fait, vers une sorte de conservatisme contre lequel elle s'est initialement constituée. Ses échecs électoraux couplés à l'influence croissante des communistes dans la vie publique contribuent à relancer son activisme militant mais pas suffisamment selon certains de ses membres qui suivent alors Georges Valois dans la dissidence du Faisceau. L'AF doit également faire face à l'apparition d'une nouvelle concurrence nationaliste avec la naissance des Jeunesses Patriotes. En 1926, elle est confrontée à la plus grave crise de son histoire : sa condamnation pontificale. Au cours de la période 1927-1929, la ligue cherche à rebondir et à maintenir son implantation et ses activités dans un contexte, par ailleurs, globalement défavorable. Les résultats sont extrêmement nuancés selon les régions mais, dans l'ensemble, il n'y a pas d'écroulement de sa structure militante même si les difficultés financières de la ligue sont de plus en plus importantes. Au tournant des années 1930, la crise économique aggrave encore ces difficultés mais contribue aussi à créer un contexte favorable à un nouvel épisode de flambée ligueuse. Au cours de la période 1933-1936, l'AF connaît un regain de vitalité dont le paroxysme se situe au moment du 6 février 1934. Cela étant, cet épisode démontre également les limites et les faiblesses du phénomène ligueur nationaliste en France. [less ▲]

Traditionally, the water content of freeze-dried biopharmaceuticals is determined by time-consuming methods such as Karl Fischer titration. As a fast and non-destructive method, many studies demonstrated the efficiency of Near-Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for that purpose [1]. In this study, NIR was applied to different freeze-dried monoclonal antibody. The aim was to evaluate the robustness of a NIR model depending on formulation composition and process parameters of the lyophilization parameters, and the benefits of NIR when developing a freeze-drying cycle for a new pharmaceutical product. A full Design of experiments (DoE) was established in order to produce materials with various formulations and various process parameters. As a first step, a calibration model was created and validated. The model creation was based on 4 target lyophilized cycles which were manufactured to obtain samples with different water content concentration. Then, 20 lyophilized cycles were produced according to the DoE. Two levels of protein and sucrose concentration, and two levels of pressure / primary drying temperature and process time were investigated. Furthermore, several samples of each experiment stored at different temperature and relative humidity conditions were evaluated. Chemometrics using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Partial Least Squares (PLS) were used to evaluate the process variations and to determine the water content, respectively. NIR is capable to differentiate between different lyophilization process conditions, based on chemometrics. Robust calibration NIR model for water determination was generated against KF independent on lyophilization process parameters and formulation composition. NIR is suitable and robust method for drug product development of freeze-dried formulation. [less ▲]
