Designing novel polyfluoropolymer architectures is attractive for the development of new applications, such as advanced coatings, purification membranes, or materials for energy. Nevertheless, controlling the radical polymerization of fluoroalkenes is very challenging due to the high reactivity of the propagating fluorinated macroradicals. This study aims at exploring the controlled copolymerization of perfluoro- hexylethylene (PFHE) and vinyl acetate (VAc) in order to prepare a range of well-defined statistical poly(PFHE-stat-VAc) copolymers with different compositions. Cobalt-mediated radical polymerization demonstrated to be active at 40 °C starting from an alkylcobalt(III) initiator, and copolymers with a fluorinated monomer content as high as ca. 80 wt % were successfully prepared. Reactivity ratios were determined to be rVAc = 0.18 and rPFHE = 0 at 40 °C and emphasized a clear tendency for alternation. Unprecedented PFHE/VAc containing block copolymers were also prepared via a single-step approach or through sequential copolymerizations. Finally, hydrolysis of the pendant ester groups of these copolymers led to the corresponding fluorinated copolymers bearing vinyl alcohol (VOH). A preliminary solution behavior study, carried out by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy on block copolymers composed of PFHE and VAc or VOH units, evidenced a marked amphiphilicity of the copolymer composed of an extremely hydrophobic PFHE block associated with a highly hydrophilic PVOH segment. Allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) following a non-myeloablative (NMA) or reduced-intensity conditioning (RIC) is considered a valid approach to treat patients with refractory/relapsed Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). When an HLA-matched donor is lacking a graft from a familial haploidentical (HAPLO) donor, a mismatched unrelated donor (MMUD) or cord blood (CB) might be considered. In this retrospective study, we compared the outcome of patients with HL undergoing a RIC or NMA allo-SCT from HAPLO, MMUD or CB. Ninety-eight patients were included. Median follow-up was 31 months for the whole cohort. All patients in the HAPLO group (N = 34) received a T-cell replete allo-SCT after a NMA (FLU-CY-TBI, N = 31, 91%) or a RIC (N = 3, 9%) followed by post-transplant cyclophosphamide. After adjustment for significant covariates, MMUD and CB were associated with significantly lower GvHD-free relapse-free survival (GRFS; hazard ratio (HR) = 2.02, P = 0.03 and HR = 2.43, P = 0.009, respectively) compared with HAPLO donors. In conclusion, higher GRFS was observed in Hodgkin lymphoma patients receiving a RIC or NMA allo-SCT with posttransplant cyclophosphamide from HAPLO donors. Our findings suggest they should be favoured over MMUD and CB in this setting. [less ▲]

Microgravity, confinement, isolation, and immobilization are just some of the features astronauts have to cope with during space missions. Consequently, long-duration space travel can have detrimental effects on human physiology. Although research has focused on the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system in particular, the exact impact of spaceflight on the human central nervous system remains to be determined. Previous studies have reported psychological problems, cephalic fluid shifts, neurovestibular problems, and cognitive alterations, but there is paucity in the knowledge of the underlying neural substrates. Previous space analogue studies and preliminary spaceflight studies have shown an involvement of the cerebellum, cortical sensorimotor, and somatosensory areas and the vestibular pathways. Extending this knowledge is crucial, especially in view of long-duration interplanetary missions (e.g., Mars missions) and space tourism. In addition, the acquired insight could be relevant for vestibular patients, patients with neurodegenerative disorders, as well as the elderly population, coping with multisensory deficit syndromes, immobilization, and inactivity. This paper presents a novel equivalent, which is suitable for simulation of inertial and primary frequency control effects. In the model reduction procedure, dynamic power injectors are used to replace the external system and to mimic its dynamic behavior. The parameters of the equivalents are tuned with a simple approach presented in this paper. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated on a modified version of the ENTSO-E Dynamic Study Model. The results show that the system frequency response of the unreduced system is retained and a speedup of the simulations of around 4.0 is achieved. [less ▲]

In recent years, inclusive design (a.k.a. universal design or design for all) is one of the developed approaches which aims to consider the diverse human abilities and conditions in the design process. As defined by the European Institute for Design and Disability (EIDD) ‘design for all’ is designing for diversity, social inclusion and equality. Considering the social and demographic changes in the 21st century, which include an international movement towards social inclusion and more specifically the rights of disabled people, an inclusive approach is turning into a necessity for today’s diverse and ageing society. In the case of architectural and urban heritage, the disabled people or in better words those with diverse sensory, mental or mobility abilities which differ from the general public, have the right to experience, interact, and engage with heritage and its values. As part of an extensive interdisciplinary research on an inclusive approach to built heritage values which connects the fields of architecture, history, conservation, inclusive design, and digital humanities, this paper investigates the potentials of incorporating digital tools and techniques in the different aspects of this research. The extensive study involves communication between the researcher, network of relevant experts, and the historic built environment with the target community of disabled people and in this paper, the digital means to facilitate these interactions have been studied. As a step towards answering the question ‘what are suitable methods and tools for facilitating and acquiring insight into diversely abled people’s engagement with and understanding of architectural heritage and its values?’, it more specifically focuses on the interaction of the disabled people with the historic architecture and urban spaces. Additionally, in a more general approach, by linking the fields of digital humanities and architectural research, the existing tools for the different stages of research ranging from data collection and storage, data analysis, and dissemination are explored. By conducting and elaborating relevant research examples, this study shows how incorporating digital tools and techniques derived from Digital Humanities such as retrieving data through APIs, textual analysis, creating and querying databases, and data visualization can facilitate research in the field of architecture and built heritage. Moreover, in studying the relation between disability and the historic built environment, it indicates that acquiring knowledge on the potentials in practical digital tools for the interaction of disabled people and the built heritage, can have a significant impact on the research approach and findings. As for an inclusive approach to built heritage, the disabled people can be taken into account with their prospective extended digital abilities. Hence in today’s digital world, integrating the digital tools and technologies in architectural heritage research is not only necessary practical means for conducting research but can also impact the theoretical approach, allowing to carry out extensive and innovative research in an efficient manner. La présente contribution propose une étude des ressorts de l’émergence et de la stabilisation de ces dispositifs numériques qui émergent dans le cours de transformations organisationnelles. Nous montrons comment, dans une compagnie d’assurances, les dispositifs numériques sont mobilisés pour répondre à une volonté de « modernisation » de l’organisation et d’optimisation de l’espace de travail. Hydrodistillation assisted by microwave (HDAM) and Head space solid phase micro-extraction (HSSPME) of Myristica fragrans houtt (MF) were investigated. A kinetic study was performed for MF seeds using two techniques (HDAM: Hydrodistillation assisted by microwave and SDAM: steam distillation assisted by microwave). The effect of the cryogenic grinding (CG) showed differences in yields and composition of volatile oils compared to the simple grinding (SG). HDAM–SG (3.4%) and SDAM–SG (2.55%) allowed extraction of substantial amounts of volatile oils in less time compared with HDAM–CG (4.75%) and SDAM–CG (3.8%). The kinetic study (differential and accumulated yields) of essential oil extraction was quantitatively and qualitatively performed showing a significant variation of composition with the extraction time, especially for accumulated yields such as sabinene (31.48–38.78%), α-pinene (12.74–14.09%) and β-pinene (10.01–12.11%). Similarly, the HS-SPME–GC–MS analysis showed also a significant variation of MF seeds volatile composition according some parameters as the type of fibre coating (PDMS: Polydimethylsiloxane and PDMS– DVB: Polydimethylsiloxane divenylbenzene), particle size, grinding mode and the mass used. The chemical groups (monoterpenoids, aliphatic and aromatic alcohols and esters) showed specific behaviour in SPME analysis. SPME sampling parameters were optimized for these components. [less ▲]

Many in vitro or in vivo studies highlighted the potential deleterious effects of phenolic organohalogenated compounds (POHs) on the health, particularly on the thyroid system homeostasis, however few large scale human epidemiological studies have been carried out, especially in Europe. Further studies monitoring the human contamination by POHs, the sources of exposure and the influence of these compounds on thyroid health are still needed. Therefore we determined the concentrations of 16 POHs (pentachlorophenol (PCP), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), 4 bromophenols (BPs), 3 hydroxy-polybromodiphenylethers (OH-PBDEs) and 7 hydroxy-polychlorobiphenyls (OH-PCBs)) in serum from 274 people aged from 18 to 76 years old living in Liege (Belgium) and the surrounding area. A questionnaire about their alimentary habits, life style and home environment was also administered to the volunteers. The predominant compound measured in the population was PCP (median concentration of 593.0 pg mL−1). 4-OH-CB 107, 4-OH-CB 146 and 4-OH-CB 187 were detected in all samples and contributed for 75% of the sum of OH-PCBs (ΣOH-PCBs). The median measured in our population for ΣOH-PCBs was 143.7 pg mL−1. TBBPA and 2,4,6-tribromophenol were detected in 31% and 63.8% of the samples respectively while the detection frequency observed for the other BPs and the OH-PBDEs was close to zero. We computed multivariate regression models in order to assess the influence of demographic and lifestyle parameters on the PCP and ΣOH-PCBs contamination levels. Significant correlation was found between the PCP concentration and sex, smoker status, sea fish consumption and level of education, although the model seemed to be a poor (R2 = 0.14) predictor of the PCP concentration. The model computed for ΣOHPCBs was more explanatory (R2 = 0.61) and involved age, BMI and sea fish consumption. Finally, we assessed the parameters affecting the ΣOH-PCBs/ΣPCBs ratio. The model proposed involved age, BMI, smoker status and parent PCB level, and explained 41% of the variability of the ΣOH-PCBs/ΣPCBs ratio. [less ▲]
