The predominant production model of Bioenergy, which is based on first-generation biofuels developed on a global scale, creates ecological impacts throughout the production chain, resulting in a paradox, as well as social unrest and territorial conflict. This paper focuses on agro-energy and second-generation biofuels, investigating the structural differences, the advantages, the potential problems and the possible solutions of some local biofuel initiatives in North-Western Europe. Recent theoretical accounts of verbal and visuo-spatial short-term memory (STM) have proposed the existence of domain-general mechanisms for the maintenance of serial order information. These accounts are based on the observation of similar behavioural effects across several modalities, such as temporal grouping effects. Across two experiments, the present study aimed at extending these findings, by exploring a STM modality that has received little interest so far, STM for musical information. Given its inherent rhythmic, temporal and serial organisation, the musical domain is of interest for investigating serial order STM processes such as temporal grouping. In Experiment 1, the data did not allow to determine the presence or the absence of temporal grouping effects. In Experiment 2, we observed that temporal grouping of tone sequences during encoding improves short-term recognition for serially presented probe tones. Furthermore, the serial position curves included micro-primacy and micro-recency effects, which are the hallmark characteristic of temporal grouping. Our results suggest that the encoding of serial order information in musical STM may be supported by temporal positional coding mechanisms similar to those reported in the verbal domain. [less ▲]

In the eighteenth century, literary journals have set a specific relationship with their readers. By publishing letters from the public and by answering to their demands (or not), the journalists have established a readers’ community that share a common cultural universe. This article aims at analyzing the relationship between the antiphilosophe François-Xavier de Feller and the readership of his Journal historique et littéraire. The journalist, who wishes to fight against the philosophes and to spread his own radical ideas above all, has however taken his public’s capacity of reaction into account. This article will question the mechanisms of this relationship by considering the letters from the public to the editor but also Feller’s own addresses to his readership published in the journal. Even if he refuses the idea that every man is able to use his own critical reason, the journalist has been influenced by his readership but, more importantly, he has maintained in his public a new form of criticism, radically opposed to the ideas of Enlightenment. Cold-formed steel elements are being used more frequently on construction sites because of the good strength-to-cost ratio. However, insufficient studies are published examining the properties of these constructions. This paper presents a study of cold formed steel bolted gusset plate connections. A “three springs” mechanical model to calculate joint stiffness is presented. Then the results predicted through the proposed model are validated through comparisons to experimental and finite element results. [less ▲]

Objectives: To examine beliefs about cracking sounds heard during highvelocity lowamplitude (HVLA) thrust spinal manipulation in individuals with and without personal experience of this technique. Methods: We included 100 individuals. Among them, 60 had no history of spinal manipulation, including 40whowereasymptomatic with or without a past history of spinal pain and 20whohad nonspecific spinal pain. The remaining 40 patients had a history of spinal manipulation;amongthem, 20 were asymptomatic and 20 had spinal pain. Participants attended a oneonone interview during which they completed a questionnaire about their history of spinal manipulation and their beliefs regarding sounds heard during spinal manipulation. Results: Mean age was 43.5±15.4 years. The sounds were ascribed to vertebral repositioning by 49% of participants and to friction between two vertebras by 23% of participants; only 9% of participants correctly ascribed the sound to the release of gas. The sound was mistakenly considered to indicate successful spinal manipulation by 40% of participants. No differences in beliefs were found between the groups with and without a history of spinal manipulation. Conclusions: Certain beliefs have documented adverse effects. This study showed a high prevalence of unfounded beliefs regarding spinal manipulation. These beliefs deserve greater attention from healthcare providers, particularly those who practice spinal manipulation. [less ▲]

Changing dynamics of power systems caused by the migration from conventional to distributed energy sources increase the risk of blackouts due to voltage instability, especially in case of unforeseen network conditions (e.g., (N-k)-cases). To enable a both secure and efficient power supply, novel monitoring and emergency control systems for the identification of voltage emergency situations as well as the execution of control actions are required that react reliably in due time and adaptively in case of changing network situations. This paper presents a distributed agent-based approach to counteract voltage instability that is based solely on local measurements and limited inter-agent communication. Distributed agents located at substations in the (sub-)transmission network monitor distribution and transmission voltages as well as load tap changer positions and are able to autonomously curtail load in case system stability is endangered. The applicability of the approach is demonstrated in a co-simulation environment interfacing the multi-agent system with a dynamic power system simulation. The presented approach allows for an early detection of voltage instability as well as a coordinated execution of available control actions. [less ▲]

The paper describes the factors influencing the interplay of pension and tax policies from a fiscal and welfare perspective, and identifies areas where both topics can materially impact one another. The paper also explores the arguments for coordination between income tax and pension policies in light of the distributional and behavioral synergies. The paper raises questions regarding tax policy’s effectiveness for materially influencing pension coverage, contribution compliance, and labor mobility. The authors argue for taxing pension similarly to all other incomes and for limiting tax treatment of mandatory pensions, and for initiating coordinated tax and pension reforms before electoral demographics render such reforms even more difficult than today.
