We revisit the limit on very light axion-like particles (ALPs) from the absence of gamma rays coincidental with the neutrino burst from SN1987A. We use updated supernova simulations, modern models for the magnetic field inside the Galaxy, and a Primakoff cross section which takes into account proton-degeneracy and mass-reduction effects. We finally give an updated exclusion plot for the electromagnetic coupling of sub-eV ALPs, comparing our new bound with other limits as well as with future ALP searches. [less ▲]

Eleven samples of the traditional date product " Btana" prepared by direct (DBM) and indirect method (UBM) were analysed to characterize their bacterial diversity. A total of 42 representative isolates have been chosen for molecular identification. 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed the presence of 20 species within 30.9% belonged to the genus Bacillus, 28.6% of the Staphylococcus, and Enterococcus genus. Within the minority represented species, two isolates were identified as Paenibacillus (isolated from UBM exclusively), Streptococci salivarius, Lactobacillus sakei and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Preliminary results indicate that IBM is more selective for spore former bacilli contrary to DBM that show more diversity in the bacterial flora with a prevalence of Enterococcus. API ZYM test showed that the bacilli species have a weak hydrolase activity. [less ▲]

Familial pituitary adenomas accounts for approximately 5-8 % of all pituitary adenomas. Besides the adenomas occurring as part of syndromic entities that bring together several endocrine or other systems disorders, 2-3% of the familial pituitary adenomas fit into the familial isolated pituitary adenomas (FIPA) syndrome. 20% of FIPA syndromes have shown mutations in the AIP gene and have distinct clinical characteristics. Recent findings have isolated a new non-AIP FIPA syndrome called X-LAG, resulting from duplication in GPR-101 gene. These new advances in the field of pituitary disease are opening up a new challenging domain to both clinician and researcher. This review will focus on these last findings and their contribution to the diagnosis and the management of familial pituitary adenomas. [less ▲]

Purpose: This paper describes the theoretical background and main hypotheses at the basis of SAFIR®, a nonlinear finite element software for modeling structures in fire. The paper also explains how to use the software at its full extent. The discussed numerical modeling principles can be applied with other similar software. Approach: Following a general overview of the organization of the software, the thermal analysis part is explained, with the basic equations and the different possibilities to apply thermal boundary conditions (compartment fire, localized fire, etc.). Next, the mechanical analysis part is detailed, including the time integration procedures and the different types of finite elements: beam, truss, shell, spring and solid. Finally, the material laws are described. The software capabilities and limitations are discussed throughout the paper. Findings: By accommodating multiple types of finite elements and materials, by allowing the user to consider virtually any section type and to input the fire attack in multiple forms, the software SAFIR® is a comprehensive tool for investigating the behavior of structures in the fire situation. Meanwhile, being developed exclusively for its well-defined field of application, it remains relatively easy to use. Value: The paper will improve the knowledge of readers (researchers, designers and authorities) about numerical modeling used in structural fire engineering in general and the capabilities of a particular software largely used in the fire engineering community. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is blood plasma with a high concentration of autologous platelets which constitute an immense reservoir of growth factors. The clinical use of PRP is widespread in various medical applications. Although highly popular with athletes, the use of PRP for the treatment of tendinopathies remains scientifically controversial, particularly due to the diversity of products that go by the name of “PRP.” To optimize its use, it is important to look at the various stages of obtaining PRP. In this literature review, we take a closer look at eight parameters which may influence the quality of PRP: 1) anticoagulants used to preserve the best platelet function, 2) the speed of centrifugation used to extract the platelets, 3) the platelet concentrations obtained, 4) the impact of the concentration of red and while blood cells on PRP actions, 5) platelet activators encouraging platelet degranulation and, hence, the release of growth factors, and 6) the use or nonuse of local anesthetics when carrying out infiltration. In addition to these parameters, it may be interesting to analyze other variables such as 7) the use of ultrasound guidance during the injection with a view to determining the influence they have on potential recovery. From both a scientific and a practical point of view, two major trends seem to presently rule the adult training field: the psychosociological trend and the ergonomic trend. Though each one has widely contributed in developing training in organizational human resources development, we fail to see any significant level of understanding between the two trends or any dialogue based on scientific objectivity. The aim of this present paper is to hopefully initiate a dialogue with an eye towards development in training practices. A better understanding of these main approaches would bring help to those who seek to train personnel and to better orientate their choice of training. [less ▲]

In this paper I want to create a presumption in favor of a nonreductive analysis of emotional phenomenology. The presumption relies on the claim that none of the nonemotional elements which are usually regarded as constitutive of emotional phenomenology may reasonably be considered responsible for the evaluative character of the latter. In section 1 I suggest this is true of cognitive elements, arguing that so-called ‘evaluative’ judgments usually result from emotional, evaluative attitudes, and should not be conflated with them. In section 2 I argue the same holds true for conative attitudes (desires and acts of the will). And in section 3 I briefly mention some salient aspects of the version of nonreductive analysis I lean toward. [less ▲]

Proteomic approach was applied to identify total proteins, particularly the enzymatic content, from wild cardoon flowers. As the selection of an appropriate sample preparation method is the key for getting reliable results, two different extraction/precipitation methods (trichloroacetic acid and phenol/ammonium acetate) were tested on fresh and lyophilized flowers. After two-dimensional electrophoresis (2D–E) separations, a better protein pattern was obtained after phenol extraction from lyophilized flowers. Only 46 % of the total analyzed spots resulted in a protein identification by mass spectrometry MALDI-TOF. Four proteases (cardosins A, E, G, and H), which have become a subject of great interest in dairy technology, were identified. They presented molecular weights and isoelectric points very close and high levels of homology between matched peptides sequences. The absence of the other cardosins (B, C, D, and F) could be an advantage, as it reduces the excessive proteolytic activity that causes bitter flavors and texture defects, during cheese making.
