AIASHI : An innovative project for ORBi

ORBi is a pioneer in science communication

Since 2008, ORBi has been the unique deposit of the entire electronic version of all articles published by the members of ULiège. It champions openness, collaboration, and the pursuit of knowledge without any barriers. It has won widespread international recognition, positioning ULiège as one of the world leaders in the field.

All members of the ULiege community are engaged in creating knowledge and collaborating across academic fields and the globe.  Our culture of collaboration drives innovative discoveries in areas vital to our world, health, and intellectual life. To support the thriving research enterprise ecosystem and maintain public trust in a culture of integrity that celebrates the diversity of ideas and people, ORBi enables the University of Liège's published scientific production to be visualized, promoted and distributed on a global scale.

An innovative project

Michel Moutschen, Vice-Rector of Research at ULiege, initiated a large-scale project to provide the dynamic ecosystem ORBI with new capabilities.

Here, we are highlighting the critical aspects:

  • Accessibility and Organization: University libraries serve as intellectual hubs. The ORBi project will ensure easy resource access to all through high-level yet intuitive search mechanisms.
  • Research gaps and new avenues: Analyzing the existing literature reveals areas where knowledge could be improved. These gaps inspire fresh inquiries. Libraries should actively promote emerging fields. By highlighting developing research areas, we encourage scholars to venture beyond established boundaries.
  • Knowledge consolidation: Consolidating diverse perspectives through curated collections or collaborative projects enriches scholarly discourse. Libraries can curate summaries, meta-analyses, and comparative studies, aiding scholars in their quest for understanding. One key consideration of institutional repositories is the creation of 'meta-portals, ‘which are comprehensive platforms made up of specific institutional directories. They provide a centralized access point to a wide range of research materials, making it easier for researchers to discover and access relevant resources across different disciplines and institutions.

AIASHI, a research project of the University of Liege HEC Management School, is a critical component of the ORBI project. It develops artificial intelligence technologies for document analysis based on natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning (ML). These technologies will enhance ORBI's capabilities, particularly in document analysis and topic modeling.

AIASHI proposes to create a use case to implement its solutions, specifically the Hierarchical Topic Modeling Over Time (HTMOT) module. This module is a tool for analyzing the evolution of topics in a corpus of documents over time. It will be used in the ORBI project to track the development of research topics and trends, providing valuable insights for researchers and facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration.

AIASHI will provide a topic analysis of the complete repository of 86,000 Open Access articles to create a structured and addressable corpus of information and establish a cartography of its repository's contents for private use. Yet, its first iteration will not address the document’s citations, affiliations, or metadata.

The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) does not prevent research data from being archived and shared for research use by others as long as the data protection principles are met. ORBi and AIASHI are committed to fully complying with these regulations as they process personal data or control its processing with the support of their Data Protection Officer (DPO).

As the research purpose does not imply benefiting from the personal data inseparably attached to the documents, we will implement anonymizing or pseudonymizing methods wherever possible.

Under the transparency provisions of the GDPR, the University of Liège (AIASHI) will process the personal data of the authors of the documents contained in ORBi (e-mail address, identity, postal address, funding linked to the article, field of academic expertise, publications and interests) on the basis of the University's mission of public interest in research. These data will be kept for up to 12 months after publication of the results.

Governance for the future

Library governance must be forward-thinking and adapt to technological shifts to ensure relevance.

This project will involve researchers, librarians, and administrators in governance and provide the community with essential new analysis and communication tools. The collective wisdom will shape library policies, resource allocation, and future-proofing.

Strategic Direction and Inclusive Decision-Making

Research impact extends beyond academia. It influences policies, industries, and societal practices. This ORBi initiative will boost visualization of the University of Liège's scientific production, widening research distribution globally.  It will showcase researchers' impact and influence and encourage collaborations as they promote their expertise and reputation.
