A six-month-old alpaca was presented to the veterinary teaching hospital of the University of Liège (Belgium) with a bilateral cataract. A decision was made to perform bilateral cataract surgery after an ocular ultrasound and electroretinogram were performed to assess the posterior segment and retinal function, respectively. As a premedication, the alpaca received xylazine, butorphanol and midazolam intramuscularly. Anaesthesia was induced subsequently with ketamine and midazolam intravenously and maintained with isoflurane on oxygen/air mixture. The alpaca was mechanically ventilated during surgery. Neuromuscular blockade was induced and maintained with cis-atracurium intravenously. The dose of cis-atracurium was permanently adapted using a peripheral nerve stimulator. This case report brings new knowledge regarding the use and dosage of cis-atracurium in alpacas. [less ▲]

Antarctic terrestrial and marine environments are under increasing pressure from national operator activities, tourism and climate change. The Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty provides overarching legislation concerning the environmental management of the Treaty area, with 2016 marking the Protocol’s 25th anniversary. The Protocol also established the Committee for Environmental Protection (CEP) to provide advice to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) on environmental matters. Today, the CEP’s Five-Year Work Plan and Climate Change Response Work Programme lists and prioritises issues that need to be addressed to ensure impacts in Antarctica by human activities are both recognized andminimised.Despite all of this, recent evaluations have suggested that a slow pace of environmental policy development presents a significant threat to effective Antarctic conservation. Progress on many environmental issues, including wildlife disturbance, the conservation status of Antarctic species, area protection and pollution management, is glacial or has stalled completely. Whilst in some cases capacity issues concerning those responsible for Antarctic environmental policy work may be a contributing factor, the level of interaction between researchers and those responsible for environmental management and decision-making is also of importance. Without quality science - and effective interpretation of research results - policymakers have little evidence on which to base their decisions. But researchers need to know policymakers’ needs. Two-way communication is essential: policymakers could ask the research community to answer specific environmental questions, and, in turn, researchers could present evidence-based recommendations and highlight emerging threats. But how is this to be funded? Ultimately, effective communication is needed between national government departments responsible for funding Antarctic research and those dealing with Antarctic environmental protection. Hopefully, this will ensure essential research informing environmental policy decisions is adequately resourced. In reality, the cost is likely to be trivial compared with the resources spent by Parties on Antarctic logistics. [less ▲]

Metagenomics has proven to be a powerful tool in exploring a large diversity of natural environments such as air, soil, water, and plants, as well as various human microbiota (e.g. digestive tract, lungs, skin). DNA sequencing techniques are becoming increasingly popular and less and less expensive. Given that high-throughput DNA sequencing approaches have only recently started to be used to decipher food microbial ecosystems, there is a significant growth potential for such technologies in the field of food microbiology. The aim of this review is to present a survey of recent food investigations via metagenomics and to illustrate how this approach can be a valuable tool in the better characterization of foods and their transformation, storage and safety. Traditional food in particular has been thoroughly explored by global approaches in order to provide information on multi-species and multi-organism communities. [less ▲]

RNAi offers opportunities to generate new traits in genetically modified (GM) plants. Instead of expressing novel proteins, RNAi-based GM plants reduce target gene expression. Silencing of off-target genes may trigger unintended effects, and identifying these genes would facilitate risk assessment. However, using bioinformatics alone is not reliable, due to the lack of genomic data and insufficient knowledge of mechanisms governing mRNA-small (s)RNA interactions. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. [less ▲]

Despite notable achievements in glioblastoma diagnosis and treatment, the prognosis of glioblastoma patients remains poor and reflects the failure of current therapeutic modalities. In this context, innovative therapeutic strategies have recently been developed to specifically target glioblastoma stem cells, a subpopulation of tumor cells involved in experimental tumorigenesis and known to be critical for tumor recurrence and therapeutic resistance. The current review summarizes the different trails which make glioblastoma stem cells resistant to treatments, mainly focusing on radio-, chemo- and immunotherapy. This broad overview might actually help to set up new bases for glioblastoma therapy in order to better fight tumor relapses and to improve the patients’ prognosis. [less ▲]

High dietary protein imposes a metabolic acid load requiring excretion and buffering by the kidney. Impaired acid excretion in CKD, with potential metabolic acidosis, may contribute to the progression of CKD. Here, we investigated the renal adaptive response of acid excretory pathways in mice to high-protein diets containing normal or low amounts of acid-producing sulfur amino acids (SAA) and examined how this adaption requires the RhCG ammonia transporter. Diets rich in SAA stimulated expression of enzymes and transporters involved in mediating NH4+ reabsorption in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle. The SAA-rich diet increased diuresis paralleled by downregulation of aquaporin-2 (AQP2) water channels. The absence of Rhcg transiently reduced NH4+ excretion, stimulated the ammoniagenic pathway more strongly, and further enhanced diuresis by exacerbating the downregulation of the Na+/K+/2Cl(-) cotransporter (NKCC2) and AQP2, with less phosphorylation of AQP2 at serine 256. The high protein acid load affected bone turnover, as indicated by higher Ca2+ and deoxypyridinoline excretion, phenomena exaggerated in the absence of Rhcg. In animals receiving a high-protein diet with low SAA content, the kidney excreted alkaline urine, with low levels of NH4+ and no change in bone metabolism. Thus, the acid load associated with high-protein diets causes a concerted response of various nephron segments to excrete acid, mostly in the form of NH4+, that requires Rhcg. Furthermore, bone metabolism is altered by a high-protein acidogenic diet, presumably to buffer the acid load. [less ▲]

The121 Sb partial density of phonon states (DPS) in nanopowder antimonides were obtained with nuclear inelastic scattering on Zn1+xSb, FeSb2, and NiSb prepared by a wet chemistry route. The DPS is compared with the bulk counterpart. An increase of the Debye level indicative of a decrease of the isothermal speed of sound is systematically observed. This observation reveals that the decrease in speed of sound observed in nanostructured thermoelectric materials is not restricted to sintered nanocomposites. © 2014 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Natural resources have a determinant role in conflicts. Natural resources can in fact motivate the initiation, duration, or finalisation of a conflict. By analysing the most representative civil conflicts in African countries after the Cold War, this essay explores the role of resources in each phase of the conflict. The essay looks specifically at the role of natural resources in the initiation, escalation, deescalation and cessation of conflicts (Jeong, 2008). It is concluded that resources can: motivate and shape the type of conflict taking place, determine the duration and intensity of the conflict, influence the peace and reconstruction processes after the end of the conflict.

Molecular technologies have shown unequivocally that much of Antarctica’s biological value and diversity lies in its microbiota. Microbial diversity varies greatly over small spatial scales, and there may be high levels of endemism in some groups. At the 2012 SCAR Open Science Conference, .70% of scientific presentations by terrestrial biologists concerned microbiology, and the topic features prominently in the newly approved SCAR biology programmes State of the Antarctic Ecosystem (AntEco) and Antarctic Thresholds - Ecosystem Resilience and Adaptation (AnT-ERA). The future looks bright for Antarctic microbiology - but some significant threats need to be addressed and resolved. [less ▲]

[less ▲]

The presence of flavor symmetries in the lepton sector may have several consequences for the generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe via leptogenesis. We review the mechanism in general type-I, type-II and type-III seesaw models. We then turn to the discussion of the cases when the asymmetry is generated in the context of seesaw models extended with flavor symmetries, before or after flavor symmetry breaking. Finally we explain how the interplay between type-I and type-II seesaws can (or not) lead to viable models for leptogenesis even when there is an exact mixing pattern enforced by the flavor symmetry. The phase purity and the lattice dynamics in bulk EuTiO3 were investigated both microscopically, using x-ray and neutron diffraction, Eu-151-Mossbauer spectroscopy, and Eu-151 nuclear inelastic scattering, and macroscopically using calorimetry, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, and magnetometry. Furthermore, our investigations were corroborated by ab initio theoretical studies. The perovskite symmetry, Pm (3) over barm, is unstable at the M- and R-points of the Brillouin zone. The lattice instabilities are lifted when the structure relaxes in one of the symmetries: I4/mcm, Imma, R (3) over barc with relative relaxation energy around -25 meV. Intimate phase analysis confirmed phase purity of our ceramics. A prominent peak in the Eu specific density of phonon states at 11.5 meV can be modeled in all candidate symmetries. A stiffening on heating around room temperature is indicative of a phase transition similar to the one observed in SrTiO3, however, although previous studies reported the structural phase transition to the tetragonal I4/mcm phase our detailed sample purity analysis and thorough structural studies using complementary techniques did not confirm a direct phase transition. Instead, in the same temperature range, Eu delocalization is observed which might explain the lattice dynamical instabilities. [less ▲]

The lattice dynamics in the IV-VI compounds GeTe, SnTe and PbTe were studied by Te-125 and Sn-119 nuclear inelastic scattering and the obtained partial density of phonon states were compared with published theoretical calculations. The phase purity and structure were characterized by high energy X-ray diffraction. The effect of the atomic arrangement, rhombohedral for GeTe and cubic for SnTe and PbTe, is visible in the density of phonon states. Vibrational properties are found to be in good agreement with available calculated data and the softer character of the NaCl-type structures in comparison with the rhombohedral GeTe is confirmed.
