Starting early 2015, the fusion-based additive manufacturing of Al alloys has been developing at an ever faster pace after undergoing a comparatively slow start with respect to other metallic materials. This paper reviews the recent developments with the aim of identifying major challenges and opportunities for future work. Laser Beam Melting proves the most useful technique for the additive fabrication of Al components with strongly out-of-equilibrium microstructures and potentially enhanced mechanical behavior. Laser Cladding is also promising for specific applications such as repairs and coatings. However, a deeper understanding of the thermal history during fabrication is still needed to further optimize the microstructures and usage properties. The design of new high strength alloys and of Al-matrix composites, and the development of better adapted post-processing procedures to take greater advantage of the specificities of fusion-based additive techniques are two other important issues in view of reaching the full potential of additive Al components. In applications, such as biomedicine and systems/synthetic biology, technical limitations in actuation complicate implementation of time-varying control signals. In order to alleviate some of these limitations, it may be desirable to derive simple control policies, such as step functions with fixed magnitude and length (or temporal pulses). In this technical note, we further develop a recently proposed pulse-based solution to the convergence problem, i.e., minimizing the convergence time to the target exponentially stable equilibrium, for monotone systems. In particular, we extend this solution to monotone systems with parametric uncertainty. Our solutions also provide worst-case estimates on convergence times. Furthermore, we indicate how our tools can be used for a class of non-monotone systems, and more importantly how these tools can be extended to other control problems. We illustrate our approach on switching under parametric uncertainty and regulation around a saddle point problems in a genetic toggle switch system. [less ▲]

Massive runaway stars produce bow shocks through the interaction of their winds with the interstellar medium, with the prospect for particle acceleration by the shocks. These objects are consequently candidates for non-thermal emission. Our aim is to investigate the X-ray emission from these sources. We observed with XMM-Newton a sample of 5 bow shock runaways, which constitutes a significant improvement of the sample of bow shock runaways studied in X-rays so far. A careful analysis of the data did not reveal any X-ray emission related to the bow shocks. However, X-ray emission from the stars is detected, in agreement with the expected thermal emission from stellar winds. On the basis of background measurements we derive conservative upper limits between 0.3 and 10 keV on the bow shocks emission. Using a simple radiation model, these limits together with radio upper limits allow us to constrain some of the main physical quantities involved in the non-thermal emission processes, such as the magnetic field strength and the amount of incident infrared photons. The reasons likely responsible for the non-detection of non-thermal radiation are discussed. Finally, using energy budget arguments, we investigate the detectability of inverse Compton X-rays in a more extended sample of catalogued runaway star bow shocks. From our analysis we conclude that a clear identification of non-thermal X-rays from massive runaway bow shocks requires one order of magnitude (or higher) sensitivity improvement with respect to present observatories. Eleven samples of the traditional date product " Btana" prepared by direct (DBM) and indirect method (UBM) were analysed to characterize their bacterial diversity. A total of 42 representative isolates have been chosen for molecular identification. 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed the presence of 20 species within 30.9% belonged to the genus Bacillus, 28.6% of the Staphylococcus, and Enterococcus genus. Within the minority represented species, two isolates were identified as Paenibacillus (isolated from UBM exclusively), Streptococci salivarius, Lactobacillus sakei and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Preliminary results indicate that IBM is more selective for spore former bacilli contrary to DBM that show more diversity in the bacterial flora with a prevalence of Enterococcus. API ZYM test showed that the bacilli species have a weak hydrolase activity. [less ▲]

Proteomic approach was applied to identify total proteins, particularly the enzymatic content, from wild cardoon flowers. As the selection of an appropriate sample preparation method is the key for getting reliable results, two different extraction/precipitation methods (trichloroacetic acid and phenol/ammonium acetate) were tested on fresh and lyophilized flowers. After two-dimensional electrophoresis (2D–E) separations, a better protein pattern was obtained after phenol extraction from lyophilized flowers. Only 46 % of the total analyzed spots resulted in a protein identification by mass spectrometry MALDI-TOF. Four proteases (cardosins A, E, G, and H), which have become a subject of great interest in dairy technology, were identified. They presented molecular weights and isoelectric points very close and high levels of homology between matched peptides sequences. The absence of the other cardosins (B, C, D, and F) could be an advantage, as it reduces the excessive proteolytic activity that causes bitter flavors and texture defects, during cheese making. The material study of La Famille Soler through non-invasive imaging, molecular, structural and elemental techniques, permitted a relevant re-examination of this singular blue period painting, which is considered as the earliest Picasso’s version of Le déjeuner sur l’herbe by E. Manet. On the one hand, it was concluded that the underlying landscape painted by Vidal in 1903 referred to Manet’s masterpiece. On the other hand, it was assumed that the cubist sketch undertaken by Picasso in 1912, prior to the current blue background, consists of an uncompleted transformation of Vidal’s landscape into synthetic cubism. Tetrapod limbs are serially homologous structures that represent a particularly interesting model for studies on morphological integration, i.e. the tendency of developmental systems to produce correlated variation. In newts, limbs develop at an early larval stage and grow continuously, including after the habitat transition from water to land following metamorphosis. However, aquatic and terrestrial environments impose different constraints and locomotor modes that could affect patterns of morphological integration and evolvability. We hypothesize that this would be the case for alternative heterochronic morphs in newts, i.e. aquatic paedomorphs that keep gills at the adult stage and adult metamorphs that are able to disperse on land. To this end, we analysed patterns and strengths of correlations between homologous skeletal elements of the fore- and hindlimbs as well as among skeletal elements within limbs in both phenotypes in the alpine newt, Ichthyosaura alpestris. Our results showed that metamorphs and paedomorphs had similar, general patterns of limb integration. Partial correlations between homologous limb elements and within limb elements were higher in paedomorphs when compared to metamorphs. Decrease in partial correlation between homologous limb elements in metamorphs is accompanied with a higher evolvability of the terrestrial morph. All these results indicate that environmental demands shaped the patterns of morphological integration of alpine newt limbs and that the observed diversity in correlation structure could be related to a qualitative difference in the modes of locomotion between the morphs. We introduce the concept of constant 2-labelling of a vertex-weighted graph and show how it can be used to obtain perfect weighted coverings. Roughly speaking, a constant 2-labelling of a vertex-weighted graph is a black and white colouring of its vertex set which preserves the sum of the weights of black vertices under some automorphisms. We study constant 2-labellings on four types of vertex-weighted cycles. Our results on cycles allow us to determine (r, a, b)-codes in Z^2 whenever |a−b|>4, r>1 and we give the precise values of a and b. This is a refinement of Axenovich’s theorem proved in 2003. Understanding the potential drought characteristics under climate change is essential for reducing vulnerability and establishing adaptation strategies, especially in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (3H Plain) which is the grain production base in China. In this paper, the variation of drought characteristics including drought event frequency, duration, severity and intensity for the past 50 years (1961-2010) and future scenarios (2010-2099) based on observed meteorological data and RCP 8.5 projections were investigated, respectively. Firstly, the applicability of three climatic drought indices including the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index based on the Penman–Monteith equation (SPEI-PM) and the Thornthwaite equation (SPEI-TH) were compared in tracing recorded agricultural drought areas. Then, the drought characteristics including drought event, duration, severity and intensity using “run theory” was analyzed for both historical observations and future RCP 8.5 scenarios based on the proper index. Correlation analysis between drought indexes and agricultural drought areas showed that SPEI-PM performed better than SPI and SPEI-TH in the 3H Plain. Based on the results of SPEI-PM, droughts over the past 50 years have experienced reduced drought with shorter durations, and weaker severity and intensity. However, for the future RCP 8.5 scenario, drought is predicted to rise in frequency, duration, severity and intensity from 2010-2099 although drought components during the 2010-2039 were milder compared to historical conditions. This study highlights that the estimations for atmospheric evaporative demand would bring in differences in long term drought trend of drought indexes and consequently the applicability in 3H Plain. The results of this paper can help inform researchers and local policy makers to establish drought risk management strategies. [less ▲]

Flowers are susceptible to many pests and diseases. Therefore, they can be sprayed several times during their growth considering that no MRL are set for flow-ers. High levels of pesticide residues potentially expose daily the florists who han-dle cut flowers and possibly could endanger their health. A study was carried out to evaluate the risk for florists exposed to fungicide residues during normal profes-sional tasks. Cotton gloves were distributed to 20 florists (two pairs to each florist) and worn during two consecutive half days during normal professional tasks (from min 2 hours to max 3 hours/day) to measure their potential dermal exposure (PDE). Samples were analyzed with a multi-residue (QuEChERS) method validated by a laboratory accredited for pesticide residues and with a combination of gas and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. It appears from the results that a total of 54 fungicides with different toxicity classes were detected on cotton gloves. An average of 15.53 mg/kg fungicide residues per glove sample was meas-ured. Six of 54 are suspected of causing cancer after prolonged or repeated expo-sure. Boscalid was both the active substance for which the highest maximum and average concentrations (26.21 and 3.47 mg/kg, respectively). Famoxadone had the most critical PDE (156% AOEL for the maximum concentration). As a consequence, this study leads to conclude that Belgian florists, who worked for several years and handled a large number of flowers contaminated by high concentrations of pesti-cide residues, are exposed daily with a potential effect on their health. This sug-gests that safety standards should be set for residue levels on cut flowers. [less ▲]

While it goes undisputed that international criminal tribunals (ICTs) are, in general terms, bound to respect human rights standards, there is no consensus on whether their obligations should be identical in scope to those of national criminal tribunals. Most commentators seem to value the idea of equality in protection for international and domestic defendants alike. Yet, according to others, the human rights obligations of ICTs should be contextualised, that is, adapted to the specificities of international justice – and most critically to the gravity of international crimes. This article seeks to shed some light on this debate. It does so, in particular, by pointing out the intrinsic flexibility of human rights, and by drawing on the practice of the European Court of Human Rights with respect to gravity-based contextualism. Hydrodistillation assisted by microwave (HDAM) and Head space solid phase micro-extraction (HSSPME) of Myristica fragrans houtt (MF) were investigated. A kinetic study was performed for MF seeds using two techniques (HDAM: Hydrodistillation assisted by microwave and SDAM: steam distillation assisted by microwave). The effect of the cryogenic grinding (CG) showed differences in yields and composition of volatile oils compared to the simple grinding (SG). HDAM–SG (3.4%) and SDAM–SG (2.55%) allowed extraction of substantial amounts of volatile oils in less time compared with HDAM–CG (4.75%) and SDAM–CG (3.8%). The kinetic study (differential and accumulated yields) of essential oil extraction was quantitatively and qualitatively performed showing a significant variation of composition with the extraction time, especially for accumulated yields such as sabinene (31.48–38.78%), α-pinene (12.74–14.09%) and β-pinene (10.01–12.11%). Similarly, the HS-SPME–GC–MS analysis showed also a significant variation of MF seeds volatile composition according some parameters as the type of fibre coating (PDMS: Polydimethylsiloxane and PDMS– DVB: Polydimethylsiloxane divenylbenzene), particle size, grinding mode and the mass used. The chemical groups (monoterpenoids, aliphatic and aromatic alcohols and esters) showed specific behaviour in SPME analysis. SPME sampling parameters were optimized for these components. [less ▲]

District heating networks (DHN) are generally considered as a convenient, economic and environmental-friendly way to supply heat to a large amount of buildings. Some modelling methods are required to consider the dynamic behaviour of district heating networks to design them correctly, spare the investment costs and limit the heat losses related to the use of a too high operating temperatures. For the same reasons, the DHN control or retrofit of installations also requires the assessment of the DHN dynamic behaviour. To achieve this, the heat transport in DHN, which is one of the key issues in the behaviour of a whole centralized heating system, has to be correctly modelled. Previous work evidenced current limitations of one dimensional finite volume method to model heat transport in pipes and proposed an alternative method considering the thermal losses and the inertia of the pipes. The present contribution intends to experimentally validate this model on a test rig available at the Thermodynamics laboratory of the University of Liège (ULg, Belgium) and on an existing district heating network. For both experimental facilities, the current model shows good agreement between the experimental data and the simulation results for a large range of water velocities. Moreover, it is shown that the thermal inertia of the pipe has a significant influence on the outlet pipe temperature profile. [less ▲]

Au fil des siècles, le corpus latin des vitae sanctorum et des passiones martyrum s’est enrichi par l’introduction de nouveaux textes, par la réécriture et l’adaptation d’anciens remis au goût du jour, ainsi que par la traduction d’oeuvres issues du monde byzantin. Le phénomène de la réécriture hagiographique est bien connu et a fait l’objet de nombreux travaux. Celui de la traduction dans ce domaine reste en revanche peu exploité, tant il existe d’obstacles à son étude (absence de répertoire, manque d’éditions critiques, difficultés à identifier les traductions et les modèles grecs, etc.). Le présent travail propose une approche originale du phénomène, basée sur l’utilisation de la statistique linguistique. Cette approche consiste à étudier le latin utilisé par les traducteurs hagiographes pour rendre leur modèle grec et les techniques qu’ils ont adoptées pour le traduire en considérant les traductions non pas une à une, mais d’une manière comparative au moyen de l’analyse quantitative, dans le but de caractériser et de classer les traductions sur base de critères linguistiques, d’identifier et de qualifier des pratiques, des traditions localisées, des spécificités d’école ou de traducteur. La pratique de la traduction est examinée à travers un corpus de 35 textes représentatif des différentes phases de l’histoire de la traduction hagiographique latine au Moyen Âge et des différents foyers de traduction en Italie. Les analyses sont menées sur divers paramètres lexicaux et syntaxiques, en comparant d’abord le corpus, pris dans son ensemble, à un corpus de textes non traduits, puis en comparant entre eux les différents sous-corpus de traductions. Le premier type de comparaison (externe) a pour objectif de mettre en évidence les caractéristiques des traductions en général, le second (interne) de dégager les spécificités de chaque groupe de traductions. Distinct gap features in the nearest protoplanetary disk, TW Hya (distance of 59.5$\pm$0.9 pc), may be signposts of ongoing planet formation. We performed long-exposure thermal infrared coronagraphic imaging observations to search for accreting planets especially within dust gaps previously detected in scattered light and submm-wave thermal emission. Three nights of observations with the Keck/NIRC2 vortex coronagraph in $L^\prime$ (3.4-4.1$\mu$m) did not reveal any statistically significant point sources. We thereby set strict upper limits on the masses of non-accreting planets. In the four most prominent disk gaps at 24, 41, 47, and 88 au, we obtain upper mass limits of 1.6-2.3, 1.1-1.6, 1.1-1.5, and 1.0-1.2 Jupiter masses ($M_J$) assuming an age range of 7-10 Myr for TW Hya. These limits correspond to the contrast at 95\% completeness (true positive fraction of 0.95) with a 1\% chance of a false positive within $1^{\prime\prime}$ of the star. We also approximate an upper limit on the product of planet mass and planetary accretion rate of $M_p\dot{M}\lesssim10^{-8} M_J^2/yr$ implying that any putative $\sim0.1 M_J$ planet, which could be responsible for opening the 24 au gap, is presently accreting at rates insufficient to build up a Jupiter mass within TW Hya's pre-main sequence lifetime. Aim: Continuous pain occurs routinely, even after invasive procedures, or inflammation and surgery, but clinical practices associated with assessments of continuous pain remain unknown. Methods: A prospective cohort study in 243 Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) from 18 European countries recorded frequency of pain assessments, use of mechanical ventilation, sedation, analgesia, or neuromuscular blockade for each neonate upto 28 days after NICU admission. Results: Only 2113/6648 (31·8%) of neonates received assessments of continuous pain, occurring variably among tracheal ventilation (TrV, 46·0%), noninvasive ventilation (NiV, 35· 0%), and no ventilation (NoV, 20· 1%) groups (p<0· 001). Daily assessments for continuous pain occurred in only 10·4% of all neonates (TrV: 14· 0%, NiV: 10· 7%, NoV: 7· 6%; p<0· 001). More frequent assessments of continuous pain occurred in NICUs with pain guidelines, nursing champions, and surgical admissions prompted (all p<0·01), and for newborns <32 weeks gestational age, those requiring ventilation, or opioids, sedatives-hypnotics, general anesthetics (O-SH-GA) (all p<0·001), or surgery (p=0· 028). Use of O-SH-GA drugs increased the odds for pain assessment in the TrV (OR:1· 60, p<0·001) and NiV groups (OR:1·40, p<0· 001). Conclusion: Assessments of continuous pain occurred in less than one-third of NICU admissions, and daily in only 10% of neonates. NICU clinical practices should consider including routine assessments of continuous pain in newborns. [less ▲]

Plant protection products play a very important role in agriculture. However, their misuse can have serious negative impacts both on human health and environment. A study was carried out to identify the plant protection products used in the Niger River valley and to observe the local pesticide management practices. Ten active substances were identified as the most used chemicals by farmers. Their toxicological properties were characterized and their respective Potential Dermal Exposures (PDE) was evaluated in order to assess the risk level for the local small growers. The UK Predictive Operator Exposure Model was used to quantify the PDE during mixing/loading and application according to the local practices. The survey shows that the most common active substances are organophosphate or pyrethroids insecticides. In addition, some other prohibited and counterfeit pesticides cocktails are also used. All active substances used in Niger River valley are highly toxic. When sprayed without personal protective equipment (PPE) they could induce significant harmful impacts on the human health after exposure. The predictive exposure levels vary from 0.0013 mg/kg bw/day to 0.4125 mg/kg bw/day, several times higher the Acceptable Operator Exposure Level (AOEL) for all actives substances. The survey also revealed that 76% of operators do not use any PPE during mixing/loading or spraying. Other bad practices observed in study area can increase the exposure of operators. Moreover, local consumers could also be exposed through intake of pesticide residues on harvested products. [less ▲]

In Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, phenotypic males and females with different sexual genotypes (XX, XY, YY) have particular behavioural and physiological traits. Compared to natural XX females and XY males, XY and YY females, and XX males expressed higher level of aggressiveness that could be related to higher levels of 17β-oestradiol and 11-ketotestosterone respectively. Our results suggest that the presence of a Y chromosome increases aggressiveness in females. However, since the same relationship between aggressiveness and the Y chromosome is not observed in males, we can hypothesize that the differences in aggressiveness are not directly dependent on the genotype but on the sex reversal procedures applied on young fry during their sexual differentiation to produce these breeders. These hormonal treatments could have permanently modified the development of the brain and consequently influenced the behaviour of adults independently of their genotype. In both hypotheses (genotype or sex reversal influence), the causes of behavioural modifications have to be searched in an early modification of the brain sexual differentiation. [less ▲]

In order to differentiate from competitors in terms of customer service, warehouses accept late orders while providing delivery in a quick and timely way. This trend leads to a reduced time to pick an order. This paper introduces workload forecasting in a warehouse context, in particular a zone picking warehouse. Improved workforce planning can contribute to an effective and efficient order picking process. Most order picking publications treat demand as known in advance. As warehouses accept late orders, the assumption of a constant given demand is questioned in this paper. The objective of this study is to present time series forecasting models that perform well in a zone picking warehouse. A real-life case study demonstrates the value of applying time series forecasting models to forecast the daily number of order lines. The forecast of order lines, along with order pickers’ productivity, can be used by warehouse supervisors to determine the daily required number of order pickers, as well as the allocation of order pickers across warehouse zones. Time series are applied on an aggregated level, as well as on a disaggregated zone level. Both bottom-up and top-down approaches are evaluated in order to find the best-performing forecasting method. BACKGROUND: Since 2010, a certified reference material ERM-DA471/IFCC has been available for cystatin C (CysC). This study aimed to assess the sources of uncertainty in results for clinical samples measured using standardized assays. METHODS: This evaluation was performed in 2015 and involved 7 clinical laboratories located in France and Belgium. CysC was measured in a panel of 4 serum pools using 8 automated assays and a candidate isotope dilution mass spectrometry reference measurement procedure. Sources of uncertainty (imprecision and bias) were evaluated to calculate the relative expanded combined uncertainty for each CysC assay. Uncertainty was judged against the performance specifications derived from the biological variation model. RESULTS: Only Siemens reagents on the Siemens systems and, to a lesser extent, DiaSys reagents on the Cobas system, provided results that met the minimum performance criterion calculated according to the intraindividual and interindividual biological variations. Although the imprecision was acceptable for almost all assays, an increase in the bias with concentration was observed for Gentian reagents, and unacceptably high biases were observed for Abbott and Roche reagents on their own systems. CONCLUSIONS: This comprehensive picture of the market situation since the release of ERM-DA471/IFCC shows that bias remains the major component of the combined uncertainty because of possible problems associated with the implementation of traceability. Although some manufacturers have clearly improved their calibration protocols relative to ERM-DA471, most of them failed to meet the criteria for acceptable CysC measurements. [less ▲]

This paper uses institutional theory to highlight different patterns of cross-sector collaboration from the perspective of social enterprises. Specifically, it explores how and why social enterprises interact with mainstream businesses and to what extent their collaboration patterns reflect a vision of how their social mission should be implemented and institutionalized. The empirical analysis is derived from a qualitative study of ‘fair trade’ – a hybrid model created by social enterprises and using market mechanisms to support small-scale producers in developing countries and to advocate for changes in international trading practices. The findings highlight three strategies used by fair trade social enterprises to manage their interactions with mainstream businesses: sector solidarity, selective engagement, and active appropriation. This paper suggests that each strategy is motivated by a different vision of how best to articulate the social mission of fair trade via specific types of collaborations. It also notes how each vision has a distinct pattern of institutionalization at the field level. This paper adds to the emergent literatures on social enterprise and social entrepreneurship, fair trade, cross-sector collaboration and hybrid organizing. [less ▲]

Climate change is widely accepted to be one of the most critical problems faced by the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (3H Plain), which is a region in which there is an over-exploitation of groundwater region and where future warmer and drought conditions might intensify crop water demand. In this study, the spatiotemporal patterns of ET0 and primary driving meteorological variables were investigated based on a historical and RCP 8.5 scenario daily data set from 40 weather stations over the 3H Plain using linear regression, spline interpolation method, a partial derivative analysis and multivariate regression. The results indicated a negative trend in all the analysis periods (except spring) of the past 54 years of which only summer and the entire year were statistically significant (p < 0.01) with slopes of -1.09 and -1.30 mm·a-1 respectively. In contrast, a positive trend was observed in all four seasons and the entire year under the RCP 8.5 scenario, with the biggest increment equal to 1.36 mm·a-1 in summer and an annual increment of 3.37 mm·a-1. The spatial patterns of the seasonal and annual ET0 exhibited the lowest values in southeastern regions and the highest values in northeastern parts of Shandong Province, probably because of the combined effects of various meteorological variables over the past 54 years. Relative humidity (RH) together with solar radiation (RS) were detected to be the main climatic factors controlling the reduction of ET0 in summer, autumn, and the entire year on the 3H Plain. ET0 in spring was mainly sensitive to changes in RS and RH, whereas ET0 in winter was most sensitive to changes in wind speed (WS) and decreased due to declining RH. Under the future RCP 8.5 scenario, the annual ET0 distribution displays a rich spatial structure with a clear northeast-west gradient and anarea with low values in the southern regions, which is similarly detected in spring and summer. The most sensitive and primary controlling variables with respect to the increment of future ET0 are in the first place RS and then mean temperature in spring, while turn to be mean temperature and then RS in summer. In autumn, future ET0 is most sensitive to RH changes. WS and RH are the controlling variables for ET0 in winter. Annual future ET0 is most sensitive to RH changes and accordingly RS is responsible for the predicted increment of the annual ET0. Better understanding of current and future spatiotemporal patterns of ET0 and of the regional response of ET0 to climate change can contribute to the establishment of a policy to realize a more efficient use of water resources and a sustainable agricultural production in the 3H Plain. Antarctic sea-ice bacterial community composition and dynamics in various developmental stages were investigated during the austral winter in 2013. Thick snow cover likely insulated the ice, leading to high (o4 μg l–1) chlorophyll-a (chl-a) concentrations and consequent bacterial production. Typical sea-ice bacterial genera, for example, Octadecabacter, Polaribacter and Glaciecola, often abundant in spring and summer during the sea-ice algal bloom, predominated in the communities. The variability in bacterial community composition in the different ice types was mainly explained by the chl-a concentrations, suggesting that as in spring and summer sea ice, the sea-ice bacteria and algae may also be coupled during the Antarctic winter. Coupling between the bacterial community and sea-ice algae was further supported by significant correlations between bacterial abundance and production with chl-a. In addition, sulphate-reducing bacteria (for example, Desulforhopalus) together with odour of H2S were observed in thick, apparently anoxic ice, suggesting that the development of the anaerobic bacterial community may occur in sea ice under suitable conditions. In all, the results show that bacterial community in Antarctic sea ice can stay active throughout the winter period and thus possible future warming of sea ice and consequent increase in bacterial production may lead to changes in bacteria-mediated processes in the Antarctic sea-ice zone. La démocratie reste un thème chéri par la philosophie politique contemporaine, pour l’écart entre ses théories et ses pratiques, pour la distance critique que ses théories offrent vis-à-vis des régimes démocratiques et de leur évolution, mais aussi parce qu’elle est un objet perpétuel de dissensus entre philosophes, au sujet duquel toute prétention à la véridiction est suspendue à sa réalisation pratique. À ce titre, la transmission de la volonté démocratique est un topos houleux de la philosophie politique contemporaine. Cette question catalyse les concepts pivots des philosophies politiques, la leur poser permet de mieux saisir les enjeux rivaux derrière une terminologie commune à plusieurs auteurs. C’est dans cette démarche que je vous propose d’examiner en miroir les philosophies de Cornélius Castoriadis et de Jacques Rancière. De plus en plus nombreux, des commentateurs rapprochent leurs pensées , qui peuvent s’appuyer sur plusieurs points communs : un attachement au concept de démocratie brandit contre les régimes parlementaires, une opposition contemporaine (quoique depuis des héritages différents) aux thèses défendues par Althusser, et une proximité de sources d’inspirations : la philosophie, le marxisme, et la psychanalyse. The prognosis of the disease could be improved by early diagnosis and treatment. From the case of a manic episode in a 16 year old teenager, we discuss the characteristics of manic prodromes, their diagnostic criteria and therapeutic means. We then criticize the concept of diagnosis in the stage of prodromal symptoms. We propose to dispense with the need for diagnosis and promote access to mental health care to any person with mental suffering. [less ▲]

Background: Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) can be caused by loss-of-function mutations in genes involved in the DNA recombination machinery, such as RAG1, RAG2 or DCLRE1C. Defective DNA recombination causes a developmental block in T cells and B cells, resulting in high susceptibility to infections. Hypomorphic mutations in the same genes can also give a partial loss of T cells, in a spectrum including leaky SCID (LS) and Omenn syndrome (OS). These patients not only develop life-threatening infections due to immunodeficiency, but also develop inflammatory/autoimmune conditions due to the presence of autoreactive T cells. Objective: We sought to develop a preclinical model that fully recapitulates the symptoms of LS/OS patients including a model for testing therapeutic intervention. Methods: We generated a novel mutant mouse (Dclre1c leaky) that develops a LS phenotype. Mice were monitored for diseases and immune phenotype and immune function were evaluated using flow cytometry, ELISA and histology. Results: Dclre1c leaky mice present with a complete blockade of B cell differentiation, with a leaky block in T cell differentiation resulting in an oligoclonal TCR repertoire and enhanced cytokine secretion. Dclre1c leaky mice also developed inflammatory symptoms including wasting, dermatitis, colitis, hypereosinophilia and high IgE levels. Development of a preclinical murine model for LS allowed the testing of potential treatment, with administration of CTLA4-Ig reducing disease symptoms and immunological disturbance, resulting in increased survival. Conclusion: These data suggest that CTLA4-Ig should be evaluated as a potential treatment of inflammatory symptoms in LS and OS patients. [less ▲]

This paper aims at validating pressure and velocity measurements conducted in two physical scale models of an ogee spillway crest operating at heads largely greater than the design head. The design head of the second model is 50% smaller than the one of the first model. No pier effect or air venting is considered in the study. The velocity field is measured by Bubbles Image Velocimetry. The relative pressure along the spillway crest is measured using pressure sensors. Comparison of measured velocities between both spillways indicates low scale effects, the scaled-profiles collapsing in most parts of the flow. By contrast, measurements of relative pressure along the spillway crest differ for large heads. A theoretical velocity profile based on potential flow theory and expressed in a curvilinear reference frame is fitted to the velocity measurements, considered as reference, for extrapolating the velocity at the spillway crest. Comparing the extrapolated velocity at the spillway crest and the velocity calculated from the relative pressure considering a potential flow finally emphasizes that bottom pressure amplitudes seem overestimated for the larger spillway, while an averaging effect might operate for the pressure measurements on the smaller spillway. Dans l’une de ses conversations avec Joachim Gasquet sur le sens de sa peinture (et de la peinture en général), Cézanne aborde de front la conception qu’il se fait de la couleur, dans son rapport à la profondeur picturale et de son articulation à la surface : « La nature n'est pas en surface ; elle est en profondeur. Les couleurs sont l'expression, à cette surface, de cette profondeur. Elles montent des racines du monde ». Cet « organisme de couleurs » que constitue le monde est transcrit dans la peinture de Cézanne par une dynamique symbiotique de la couleur et du dessin, de la ligne et du pan. La couleur restitue, par sa masse, son surgissement, son homogénéité, presque sa viscosité, la véritable chaire perceptive du monde ; une vision qui tient à distance la perspective géométrique, photographique, cinématographique fondée sur la transparence et qui repose, comme le signale Merleau-Ponty, sur la « réversibilité des dimensions » (surface-profondeur) et l’entrelacement des choses. C’est cette épaisseur du visible rendu par la couleur que l’économie de l’image numérique nous permet de redécouvrir, moins dans le registre de la « tactilité » de l’image et la picturalité du pixel, que par l’intégration, entre le support et l’image (parfois indiscernables dans le régime optique), d’un « corps » algorithmique qui règle l’actualisation du visible. Certains défauts techniques du dispositif numérique, aujourd’hui élevés au rang de pratique artistique, permettent de révéler cette matrice qui utilise alors la couleur et la coulure comme mode de visibilité. C’est le cas du Datamoshing, technique de composition numérique qui revisite tout en la radicalisant la pratique de l’incrustation vidéo. Basée sur la perturbation volontaire d’éléments de la matrice, cette technique transforme les couleurs en une forme malléable et fluide révélant ainsi leur double nature spatiale : elles sont à la fois dans l’espace de l’image et l’espace de l’image lui-même. Ces expériences de défigurations d’images s’inscrivent dans le registre des « aberrations chromatiques » dont nous proposons ici une rapide généalogie avant d’interroger la couleur digitale dans ses spécificités. Microgravity, confinement, isolation, and immobilization are just some of the features astronauts have to cope with during space missions. Consequently, long-duration space travel can have detrimental effects on human physiology. Although research has focused on the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system in particular, the exact impact of spaceflight on the human central nervous system remains to be determined. Previous studies have reported psychological problems, cephalic fluid shifts, neurovestibular problems, and cognitive alterations, but there is paucity in the knowledge of the underlying neural substrates. Previous space analogue studies and preliminary spaceflight studies have shown an involvement of the cerebellum, cortical sensorimotor, and somatosensory areas and the vestibular pathways. Extending this knowledge is crucial, especially in view of long-duration interplanetary missions (e.g., Mars missions) and space tourism. In addition, the acquired insight could be relevant for vestibular patients, patients with neurodegenerative disorders, as well as the elderly population, coping with multisensory deficit syndromes, immobilization, and inactivity. Malgré les stratégies de prévention actuelles, la maladie du greffon contre l’hôte (greffe-versus-hôte, GVH) aiguë (GVHa) reste une complication sévère et fréquente de l’allogreffe de cellules souches hématopoïétiques. Bien que la physiopathologie de celle-ci ne reste que partiellement élucidée à ce jour, il est classiquement admis que les lymphocytes T (LT) jouent un rôle important dans son processus biologique. Les progrès récents de l’immunologie des LT dans la GVHa ont permis de diversifier les pistes visant à prévenir la survenue de cette complication post-greffe. Plusieurs approches sont en cours d’exploration dans des essais cliniques avec des résultats encourageant tels que la manipulation ex vivo des LT avant leur transfert chez le patient afin de leur faire exprimer des gènes suicide, l’élimination in vivo des LT proliférant directement après la greffe, l’inhibition de l’activation des LT en interférant avec les voies de signalisation en aval du TCR ou celles induites par les cytokines, l’induction de l’anergie des LT en bloquant les signaux de costimulation, le blocage de l’adressage des LT vers les organes lymphoïdes secondaires et les tissus cibles, la promotion de l’immunotolérance par la perfusion de lymphocytes T régulateurs ou par l’utilisation d’agents favorisant leur différenciation et leurs fonctions in vivo et la modulation de l’expression génique des cellules immunitaires par des modulateurs épigénétiques. Outre la prévention de la GVHa, le défi des nouvelles stratégies consiste également à ne pas compromettre l’effet bénéfique de la greffe contre la tumeur ni la reconstitution des défenses anti-infectieuses. La fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 soluble (sFlt-1) est un facteur anti-angiogénique libéré en quantité excessive dans la prééclampsie (PE) et impliqué dans la dysfonction endothéliale. Il est comparé au facteur de croissance placentaire pro-angiogénique (PlGF) qui diminue dans la PE. Le ratio sFlt-1/PlGF est présenté dans la littérature comme outil dans la prédiction de la prééclampsie. Un ratio < 38 confirme l’absence de prééclampsie à court-terme. Un ratio ≥ 85 dans la PE précoce (avant 34 semaines aménorrhée (SA)) et ≥ 110 dans le «late onset» (> 34 semaines d’aménorhhée) peut poser le diagnostic de prééclampsie. Dans cette étude rétrospective monocentrique, le ratio sFlt-1/PlGF a été dosé chez 183 patientes à risque dont 67 ont présenté une prééclampsie. Le ratio sFlt-1/PlGF médian pour toutes les patientes évaluées est 100,3. Le ratio médian pour les patientes ayant déclaré une prééclampsie (N=67) est 212,7 alors que celui des femmes sans prééclampsie (N=116) est de 35,4. En accord avec ces analyses, un ratio sFlt-1/PlGF ≥ 38 possède une sensibilité égale à 95,5% et une spécificité égale à 73,3%. Les valeurs prédictives positive (VPP) et négative (VPN) sont, respectivement, 67,4% et 96,6%. Ces résultats suggèrent que le ratio sFlt-1/PlGF peut être une aide dans le diagnostic de la prééclampsie [less ▲]

The synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A), a protein essential to the proper nervous system function, is found in presynaptic vesicles. Thus, SV2A targeting, using dedicated radiotracers combined with positron emission tomography (PET), allows the assessment of synaptic density in the living brain. The first-in-class fluorinated SV2A specific radioligand, [18F]UCB-H, is now available at high-activity through an efficient radiosynthesis compliant with the current good manufacturing practices (cGMP). We report here a non-invasive method to quantify [18F]UCB-H binding in rat brain with microPET. Validation study in rats confirmed the need of high enantiomeric purity to target SV2A in vivo. We demonstrated the reliability of a population-based input function to quantify SV2A in preclinical microPET setting. Finally, we investigated the in vivo metabolism of [18F]UCB-H and confirmed the negligible amount of radiometabolites in the rat brain. Hence, the in vivo quantification of SV2A using [18F]UCB-H microPET seems a promising tool for the assessment of the synaptic density in the rat brain, and opens the way for longitudinal follow-up in neurodegenerative diseases rodents’ models. In this review, we will briefly remind the physiological limitations of serum creatinine due notably to its tubular secretion and the influence of muscular mass or protein intake on its concentration. We mainly focus on the analytical limitations of serum creatinine, insisting on important concept such as reference intervals, standardization (and IDMS traceability), analytical interferences, analytical coefficient of variation (CV), biological CV and critical difference. Because the relationship between serum creatinine and glomerular filtration rate is hyperbolic, all these CVs will impact not only the precision of serum creatinine but still more the precision of different creatinine-based equations, especially in low or normal-low creatinine levels (or high or normal-high glomerular filtration rate range). Movement patterns during landing have been suggested to be related to injury risk. The purpose of this study was to determine the inter-session reliability of kinematic variables and ground reaction forces during landing in a population of male recreational athletes after a counter movement jump. Both unipodal and bipodal landings were evaluated. Furthermore, the possibility to improve landing reliability with a verbal instruction was also studied. Twenty- four male volunteers with no history of lower-extremity trauma were randomly assigned to two groups (with and without verbal landing instruction). An optoelectronic 3D system and force plates were used to measure the lower-limb joint angles and the ground reaction forces during landing. Intraclass correlation values show moderate to excellent inter-session reliability for the bipodal task (ICC average: 0.80, range: 0.46 to 0.97) and poor to excellent reliability for the unipodal task (ICC average: >0.75, range: 0.20 to 0.95). However, large standard errors of measurement values at the ankle joint at impact (27.6 ± 11.5°) and for the vertical ground reaction forces (394 ± 1091 N) show that some variables may not be usable in practice. The verbal instruction had a negative effect on the reliability of unipodal landing but improved the reliability of bipodal landing. These findings show that the reliability of a landing task is influenced by its motor complexity as well as the instruction given to the subject. [less ▲]

The effects of hydrocolloids (Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC), Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), Xanthan gum (XG), and Apple pectin (AP)) at different concentrations on dough thermo-mechanical properties and in vitro starch digestibility of gluten-free potato steamed bread were investigated. Results showed that hydrocolloids addition significantly increased the gelatinization temperature (from 52.0 to 64.2 °C) and water absorption (from 56.22 to 66.50 %) of potato dough. Moreover, hydrocolloids may be interacted with protein and starch, the density of potato protein bands was decreased by hydrocolloids addition, the reason might be that higher molecular weight complexes might be formed between proteins-hydrocolloids or proteins-proteins, thus change the protein solubility. Furthermore, steamed breads with hydrocolloids presented higher specific volume and lower hardness, and the rapidly digestible starch and estimated glycemic index were significantly decreased from 45.51 to 20.64, from 69.54 to 55.17, respectively. In conclusion, HPMC and XG could be used as improvers in the gluten-free potato steamed bread. [less ▲]

Riparian buffers are of major concern for land and water resource managers despite their relatively low spatial coverage. In Europe, this concern has been acknowledged by different environmental directives which recommend multi-scale monitoring (from local to regional scales). Remote sensing methods could be a cost-effective alternative to field-based monitoring, to build replicable “wall-to-wall” monitoring strategies of large river networks and associated riparian buffers. The main goal of our study is to extract and analyze various parameters of the riparian buffers of up to 12,000 km of river in southern Belgium (Wallonia) from three-dimensional (3D) point clouds based on LiDAR and photogrammetric surveys to i) map riparian buffers parameters on different scales, ii) interpret the regional patterns of the riparian buffers and iii) propose new riparian buffer management indicators. We propose different strategies to synthesize and visualize relevant information at different spatial scales ranging from local (<10 km) to regional scale (>12,000 km). Our results showed that the selected parameters had a clear regional pattern. The reaches of Ardenne ecoregion have channels with the highest flow widths and shallowest depths. In contrast, the reaches of the Loam ecoregion have the narrowest and deepest flow channels. Regional variability in channel width and depth is used to locate management units potentially affected by human impact. Riparian forest of the Loam ecoregion is characterized by the lowest longitudinal continuity and mean tree height, underlining significant human disturbance. As the availability of 3D point clouds at the regional scale is constantly growing, our study proposes reproducible methods which can be integrated into regional monitoring by land managers. With LiDAR still being relatively expensive to acquire, the use of photogrammetric point clouds combined with LiDAR data is a cost-effective means to update the characterization of the riparian forest conditions. Les troubles du sommeil sont fréquents chez l’enfant et leurs origines sont diverses. Ces troubles ont leur ancrage dans le développement neurophysiologique et psychoaffectif de l’enfant. Les enfants souffrant de troubles du spectre autistique présentent un déficit de sommeil, qui peut durer jusqu’à l’adolescence. Les troubles du spectre autistique comportent des comorbidités multiples, dont des altérations du sommeil. Ils sont importants à caractériser dans cette population, car ils peuvent avoir un impact négatif sur les comportements diurnes. Par ailleurs, ils entrainent souvent des difficultés au sein de la famille. La prise en charge doit avant tout prendre en compte le contexte environnemental afin d’améliorer les habitudes et l’hygiène du sommeil. Des questionnaires ainsi que des agendas de sommeil ont été remplis par des parents afin de démontrer l’importance d’une évaluation et d’une prise en compte des troubles du sommeil chez les enfants souffrant d’autisme en consultation pédopsychiatrique. Il est possible de modéliser la variation et le changement valenciel à l'aide des structures formelles que nous nommons _polygraphes_. Ces derniers étendent les arbres syntaxiques dépendanciels en autorisant des relations à porter sur d'autres relations. En prenant l'exemple de l'expression prépositionnelle ou non du datif en ancien français et en français moderne (complément des verbes _donner_, _aider_, et _pardonner_), nous montrons comment les polygraphes peuvent être employés pour montrer géométriquement la différence entre une préposition obligatoire et une préposition facultative. Le potentiel de ces structures permet également de visualiser l'évolution et de comparer le comportement des lexèmes. [less ▲]

Ce long article compare les régimes juridiques belge et québécois sur la question de la responsabilité civile pour les fautes commises par les juges dans l'exercice du pouvoir judiciaire. Bien que les solutions retenues de part et d’autre de l’Atlantique semblent divergentes a priori – absolutisme de l’immunité du juge au Québec et relativisation de celle-ci en Belgique –, un examen plus approfondi révèle que les incidences pratiques ne sont pas aussi radicalement opposées. Certes, l’État belge peut engager sa responsabilité civile en présence d’une faute du juge, ce qui ne saurait être admis au Québec , mais les modalités de l’action civile que la jurisprudence belge a retenues (spécialement la condition de recevabilité et la notion de faute caractérisée) limitent fortement l’ampleur du contentieux dans ce domaine. Par ailleurs, au Québec, on relève un infléchissement – purement théorique, car aucun cas concret où la responsabilité civile du juge a été retenue n’existe à l’heure actuelle – du principe de l’immunité absolue du juge dans le cadre de sa responsabilité civile personnelle, lorsqu’il agit sans compétence, tout en sachant ne pas avoir compétence d’agir ainsi. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a sensitive analytical tool used in the pharmaceutical field in recent years. SERS keeps all the advantages of classical Raman spectroscopy while being is more sensitive allowing its use for the detection and the quantification of low-dose substances contained in pharmaceutical samples. However, the analytical performance of SERS is limited due to the difficulty to implement a quantitative methodology correctly validated. Nevertheless, some studies reported the development of SERS quantitative methods especially in pharmaceutical approaches. In this context, this review presents the main concepts of the SERS technique. The different steps that need to be applied to develop a SERS quantitative method are also deeply described. The last part of the present manuscript gives a critical overview of the different SERS pharmaceutical applications that were developed for a non-exhaustive list of pharmaceutical compounds with the aim to highlights the validation criteria for each application. Estrogens derived from brain testosterone aromatization (neuro-estrogens) are critical for the activation of male sexual behavior. Their effects on this behavior are typically associated with long-term changes in circulating levels of testosterone and the transcriptional activity of their liganded nuclear receptors. According to this view, neuro-estrogens would prime the neural circuits controlling the long-term expression of behavior, which would then be acutely regulated by neurotransmitter systems conveying information from the social environment. In parallel, neuro-estrogens are also able to produce much faster effects than previously anticipated. Our recent investigations in Japanese quail revealed an interesting dichotomy in the regulation of male sexual behavior by membrane- and nuclear-initiated estrogen signaling providing respectively an acute modulation of sexual motivation and a long-term control of the capacity to display the copulatory sequence. In parallel, a similar dichotomy applies to the regulation of brain aromatase whose expression depends on the transcriptional activity of testosterone metabolites while its enzymatic activity is rapidly regulated in a region- and context-dependent manner. Recent evidences suggest that rapid changes in sexual motivation result from rapid changes in local estrogen production. Together, these data support the idea that the acute regulation of some aspects of male sexual behavior depends not only on classical neurotransmitter systems, but also on rapid and spatially restricted changes in local estrogen availability. The existing literature suggests that this acute regulation by neuro-estrogens of the motivational aspects of behavior could be generalized to other systems such as singing behavior in songbirds. A linear oscillator simultaneously subjected to stochastic forcing and parametric excitation is considered. The time required for this system to evolve from a low initial energy level until a higher energy state for the first time is a random variable. Its expectation satisfies the Pontryagin equation of the problem, which is solved with the asymptotic expansion method developed by Khasminskii. This allowed deriving closed-form expressions for the expected first passage time. A comprehensive parameter analysis of these solutions is performed. Beside identifying the important dimensionless groups governing the problem, it also highlights three important regimes which are called incubation, multiplicative and additive because of their specific features. Those three regimes are discussed with the parameters of the problem. [less ▲]

In Belgium silvopastoral grazing systems associating trees and pasture are instrumental in enhancing dynamic trade-offs between ruminant farming and habitat improvement. A 130-day study was conducted in Belgium from April to September 2013 to evaluate the effects of browsing a combination of shrubs and trees (i.e. hedge) on the selective behaviour of cattle and to relate these observations to changes in forage nutritive value. Twelve Holstein dairy heifers (Bos taurus; 487 kg) were allocated to either a control ryegrass pasture (i.e. control pasture group; CPG) or a pasture plus unrestricted browsing (i.e. browsing group; BG) of a hedge composed of shrubs and trees. Behaviour and selectivity towards the woody species were recorded for 14h on a daily basis during 3 consecutive days over spring, early summer and late summer. Leaves and stems of woody species and faecal samples were collected during each season to analyse their nutritive value and predict the dry matter intake by means of near infrared reflectance spectroscopy. Integrating shrubs and trees along a pasture influenced the heifers’ behaviour and BG heifers spent 19.3, 5.9 and 5.4% of their time browsing during spring, and early and late summer, respectively (P < 0.001). This behaviour was correlated to the pre-grazing pasture biomass (r=0.50; P < 0.001). Compared with the summer seasons, the greater browsing activity in spring was associated with higher plant feeding value. Overall, the most ingested species were Carpinus betulus, Cornus sanguinea, Corylus avellana and Crataegus monogyna. It was concluded that cattle use a significant time budget for browsing on temperate ryegrass pasture but further research is required to investigate potential benefits of silvopastoral systems in Belgium. In this letter, we show how a simple motion-guided nonlinear filter can drastically improve the accuracy of several pedestrian detectors. More specifically, we address the problem of how to pre-filter an image so almost any pedestrian detector will see its false detection rate decrease. First, we roughly identify moving pixels by cumulating their temporal gradient into a motion history image (MHI). The MHI is then used in conjunction with a nonlinear filter to filter out background details while leaving untouched foreground moving objects. We also show how a feedback loop as well as a merging procedure between the filtered and the unfiltered frames can further improve results. We tested our method on 26 videos from 6 categories. The results show that for a given miss rate, filtering out background details reduces the false detection rate by a factor of up to 69.6 times. Applications of timelapse inversion of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) allows monitoring variations in the subsurface that play a key role in a variety of contexts. The inversion of timelapse data provides successive images of the subsurface properties showing the medium evolution. Images quality is highly dependent on the data weighting determined from the data error estimates. However, the quantification of errors in the inversion of timelapse data has not yet been addressed. We propose a methodology for the quantification of timelapse data error based on the analysis of the discrepancy between normal and reciprocal readings acquired at different times. We apply the method to field monitoring data sets collected during the injection of heated water in a shallow aquifer. We tested different error models to show that the use of an appropriate time-lapse data error estimate yields significant improvements in terms of imaging. An adapted inversion weighting for time-lapse data implies that the procedure does not allow an over-fitting of the data, so the presence of artifacts in the resulting images is greatly reduced. Our results demonstrate that a proper estimate of time-lapse data error is mandatory for weighting optimally the inversion in order to obtain images that best reflect the medium properties evolution through time.
