Which substance(s) do these words refer to? These are the questions that this paper tries to answer, by examining the therapeutic justifications of the use of stimmi by doctors. [less ▲]

A small number of autographs are attested among the Greek literary papyri dating from the IV/III centuries BC to the VI/VII centuries AD. They can be found in the form of papyrus rolls, papyrus slips, papyrus or parchment codices or even wooden tablets. According to research by A. Petrucci and T. Dorandi, evidence from the material and the format of the piece, from the layout of the text and its writing, from the state of the text and from the literary genre allow for the identification of autographs. The present paper will briefly review the about 50 Greek literary papyri considered to be autographs. Special attention will be paid to a recently edited II-century medical papyrus (P.Oxy. 74.4970), which seems to present the characteristics of an autograph. [less ▲]

The present study on the typology of medical books in Byzantine Egypt is part of a larger research project on the reception of Classical authors in Christian Egypt, developed at the Centre de Documentation de Papyrologie Littéraire (CEDOPAL) at the University of Liège. Here I propose to examine various facets of the Greek literary medical papyri from the Byzantine period (284-641): content, format, writing material, layout, and context of production and use. Thus I intend to demonstrate the specificity of this particular type of book in comparison with the Greek medical papyri from Ptolemaic and Roman times, on the one hand, and with other literary and paraliterary papyri from the same period, on the other hand. Furthermore, I will identify traces of the copying and use of Greek medical texts within Christian contexts. [less ▲]

This paper aims to define and describe the ways of acquiring and transmitting medical knowledge in Greco-Roman Antiquity through an analysis of literary, archaeological, and, primarily, papyrological sources. The methods and practices revealed by these sources include experiment, analogy, and imitation, oral and written teaching, the composition and copying of books (illustrated or not), as well as the elaboration of commentaries, abridgments, questionnaires, and word lists. These modes of knowledge transfer were intended not only for medical practitioners and students, but also for philiatroi, for generally educated people, as well as for scribes, and eventually tachygraphers, of medical books. This paper proposes to reconstruct the means of acquisition and transmission of anatomical and surgical knowledge in the period from the death of Alexander the Great (323 BC) to the reign of Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus (913-959), through the study of archaeological, epigraphic, papyrological and manuscript sources. These testimonies bring to view strategies such as observation, experimentation, analogy and imitation, as well as oral and written teaching, redaction and copy of books (illustrated or not), elaboration of commentaries, abridgments, questionnaires and word-lists. A distinction will be drawn between texts which were addressed to physicians and medical students, on the one hand, those which were destined to philiatroi and to an educated readership, and finally those which might interest copyists and eventually tachygraphists. Famous since the Odyssey (IV, 229-230) for its drugs, Egypt furnishes the Greek world with some medical substances already mentioned in the hippocratic treatises. Moreover, many Greek drug names have been loaned from the Egyptian language, such as ἄμ(μ)ι for cumin, κίκι for castor-oil, κόμμι for gum, κῦφι for a complex preparation used for fumigation in cult practices, νίτρον for sodium carbonate, στίμμι for galena, σῶρυ for ferrous sulfate, and σάμψ(ο)υχον, for marjoram, whose name means “herb (sem) of Soukhos", another name for the crocodile god Sobek. The trade of drugs, spices and colourants, used in pharmacology, cosmetology, painting, cultual and magical practices, embalming rites and nutrition always flourished in Egypt and has intensified in Hellenistic and Roman times. As a continuation of the research on remedies of Egyptian origin in Greco-Roman pharmacopoeia, this article provides a list of Egyptian ingredients used in Greek and Latin veterinary prescriptions. The use of these substances is compared with recomandations from human medicine. Their availability and costs are also studied. [less ▲]
